Confusing Part for Me... *spoilers*

Is this a plot hole or am I mistaken?

If they planned on having Mr. Cutter (Christopher Plummer) pretend to be the art appraiser anyway, why didn't they pretend to steal the artwork?

Pretend to steal it, give it to Keegan, have him give it to the dealer, have Mr. Cutter say it's a fake. Now you've never stolen anything and had no chance of getting caught.

They would've still had to pretend to rob the place so Carlos and Deegan would've seen the news reports on tv.
Beyond that you have a point.
All they needed was carlos to believe he had been hoodwinked and take out Deegan to be scott free by the police and Deegan.

Still don't understand why the copper let Travolta and Plummer go.
She knew they'd robbed the place as they had all but admitted it

I get that, but maybe they could have just locked the guards in, turned off the lights and tripped the alarms. That way it looks legit and it makes the news, but they havn't actually committed a crime. There was no guarantee that the FBI lady was going to let them off, so it was a an unnecessary risk to actually steal the painting if the grandad was always going to imitate the art appraiser. I think this would have been a more clever ruse, then their prize would have just been the money from the art appraisal, and the FBI lady finds the forgery but can't figure out why.

I was never one to hold grudges. My father held grudges, I'll always hate him for that

I might have missed something, but wouldn't the dealer have his own appraiser?

Why is it whenever I'm having fun, it's wrong?
