The most interesting part of this show *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I found The Doctor Blake Mysteries to be sort of like an Australian version of Monk minus all of Monk's OCD tendencies, but the mysteries themselves weren't that interesting to me. None of them had me waiting with bated breath to find out the who-done-it.

However, the character of Doctor Blake I found to be quite interesting. The background on him with his war time service (and evidently quite dangerous service) along with the question of whether the wife and child he left behind are alive or dead are of interest to me. Add to those the mystery surrounding his mother's death when he was a child that he's trying to learn more of.

While he's going around Ballarat solving the murders he comes across as a sophisticated, refined (and dare I say it not that rugged) gentleman interested in the finer things in life such as a good whiskey and classical music. That war time service background throws a wrench into that because it's inferred that he had to do some fairly rough things along the line of what would be seen from a character like James Bond. I love that dichotomy in his character.

The murder mysteries aren't what holds this show together. It's that running thread of the mystery of his past life, his wife, his child, his mother's death and will all of that be unraveled. I also have to mention the running thread of the romantic tension with Jean and will they get together, but then that leads to the wife and whether she's alive or not. All of this is the strong glue for this show and incentive to keep watching.

Maybe the title should've been just Doctor Blake. Or, maybe the title is just right. Maybe it alludes to the mysteries of his life and not his duties as police surgeon.
