Anyone else hate the subtitles?

It's been years since I have seen white subtitles. Isn't it pretty standard to use yellow now? I found it really annoying especially with all those shots where the letters blended into a white background.

reply

Yellow isn't "standard." I'm watching the movie right now and can read the subtitles just fine. The white text has a black outline which separates it from the background even if the background is white. But I'm watching it on Blu-ray, so maybe you have a version with a different type of subtitle.

reply

Don't know about the OP, but i watched it on Netflix, and the subtitles were almost completely illegible at some moments.

reply

I too watched it on Netflix and there were definitely some moments where it was very difficult to read because of the background color.

reply

I prefer white subtitles to yellow, but can see yellow far easier. Funny huh? But yes, had a little bit of a tough time with the subs, but nothing that stopped me from missing any of it.

reply

I'm 25 minutes in and about to turn it off, because I keep having to pause it to read them.

reply

Dont watch this on netflix! Watch it on the telly or some where else

Netflix does its own subtitles. Get the DVD or Blu-ray. I remember watching some UK shows on Netflix, like Prime Suspect, and for reasons I won't go into, I have to keep the volume down, plus I'm in the U.S. and have a hard time making out some of the words, depending on the accent. Anyway, the DVD version does a good job, while half the time, when watching on Netflix, I could understand what was said but the subtitles either got it wrong or copped out with "illegible." Netflix is convenient and all, but given the choice, I'd rather have the physical format, for many reasons, not the least of which is Netflix does crappy subtitles.

Whether you like the film or not the subtitles were godawful and almost completely unreadable at times

reply

Yes the subtitle font and execution is atrocious.

reply

Yeah at times it blends too much into the background

reply

"Execution" perhaps not the most appropriate word to use here...

"A gorilla?! I couldn't *beep* a gorilla!

reply

Gave up watching on DVD because the subtitles were so tiny and unreadable in white type.

reply

I started to watch it on Netflix streaming, and found the subtitles unreadable. I quit after 5 minutes. I just watched it on DVD and had no problem reading the subtitles. I think anything less than DVD quality would be unwatchable.

Subtitles were very difficult to read. Have a smallish TV not a big flat screen and it was a netflix dvd. Was better watching the director commentary because they read the subtitle in the scenes that were shown. It was an interview on Democracy Now. I wish they had done a replay of the movie with someone reading the subtitles. They should have that option because the print was small and the white blended into the background and made it hard to read. Otherwise an impressive film.

reply

Yes, this was a very amateurish mistake. FOr this reason alone I can see why it didn't win or get a nod from the academy. Good subject matter, poor execution (wow, what a choice of words there... ugh). There were other things I felt were wrong about this film too. Sometimes it would seem as if the talking was cut off mid-sentence. It was very disjointed. For such a brutal look as what the guys did, the mistakes took me out of it and this is exactly what a film of this nature should NOT do.

It was good, but could have been great.

reply

Yes I hate white subtitles, the dvd of this movie has yellow subtitles which makes it much easier to read I never had a problem with it then. In fact I wish movie subtitles were in yellow instead of white it seems to stand out more.

reply

How about when they are interviewing someone wearing a white dress shirt? White subtitles over a complete white background. Yes, the subtitles did have a think black line around them, but so often they were extremely difficult to read. Big error on the part of the producers of the DVD.
