Whitehead's entrance from the tent

Honestly, I have seen a lot of movies in my lifetime. But that slow motion shot was one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen in film

Why are you wearing that stupid human suit?

reply

I agree

reply

I am in 100% agreement with you. The soundtrack, the expression on Whitehead's face and the taught rope around his chest. The most memorable sequence for me.

The music at this point was the best in the film and the soundtrack was, overall, fantastic. Wonderful scene.

I found it very unsettling, as if the character has underwent a horrific brutalization.

reply

I honestly thought that was his guts first of all, and after his screaming etc, till I realised it was just rope. The look on his face was brilliant

Had he been shown a vision of hell?

i think O'Neil showed him where it was the four men pulled him from when he first appeared?

reply

Yeah, that's a interesting interpretation. As you will see from my thread on this board (The Tug of War Sequence) I cannot stop thinking about where they pulled him from. Or is that to ?

reply

Forgive me if I have this wrong, I only saw the film the one time on Film Four on Friday night. If I remember correctly Whitehead did not eat any of the magic mushroom stew prepared by Cutler right ? If that was the case then the pulling on the rope, the brutalisation in the tent and the regurgitation of the runes were all (within the context of the film) 'real' experiences and not hallucinations. Therefore was the fact that the two others were tripping on mushrooms somewhat arbitrary ?

Any thoughts, views and comments would be greatly appreciated.

I may buy the DVD or go see it at the pictures. I need to rewatch it. Can't get it out of my head.

reply

Ill take a more mundane interpretation to the film. The tug a war scene was from one of the other guys. Whithead decided to humor the stoners especially since one of them was waving around a gun. Then some classic mushroom based time dilation and he is standing by O'Neil saying "I have found my man. I am vindicated"

And the tent was simply brutal ass rape. Nothing says do what I say like "showing your yard" as they said in the movie.

I disagree, if that was the case they could have hinted at it.

The fact that it was all unseen made me think some horrible magic voodoo was done to that poor chap, there are also hints that in the tent he may have been made to swallow the cryptic runes he vomits up later.

It's been three days now - yes, and yes.

When there is no more room in Hell, The Devil will reapply to the Zoning Commission.

Agreed, this was the most memorable moment of a brilliant film for me. Iconic, chilling, disturbing, powerful.. It's hard to adequately describe it to be honest but it was totally unlike anything else I'd ever seen. Reece Shearsmith was so perfectly cast I'm this film too.

So what went on in the tent? I don't buy the argument that he was brutalised or raped - that would be too obvious. I am going to side with the theory that he was shown something completely terrifying like a vision of hell. So was O'Neill dead and in Hell or did he cross over looking for arcane knowledge and got himself trapped? I love the questions this film throws out more than the film itself on balance.

You never know them all.

Definitely my favorite scene in the movie.

Although I don't believe any of it actually happened. A lot of the scenes in this movie aren't literal. I think realistically the guy just waved a gun in his face and pointed to his hired man and said "you're doing what I tell you" and the tent scene is just an exaggerated, hallucinatory portrayal of that domination. A really good one though.
