Some remaining questions

I realize I'm late to the game here, but I've recently made a run through Ben Wheatley's flicks, enjoying them more and more from one to the next. After a couple of viewings of this one, I'm content with my general interpretation, but there are aspects of the movie on which I haven't settled on an opinion, and I'm curious to hear anyone else's thoughts.

1. The "freeze frame" shots. In part I think this is just atmosphere, and in part I think this underlines the "limbo" nature of the field (frozen but still alive and aware; sort of driven home by Jacob's looking toward the camera during one of the shots), but I'm open to other opinions.

2. Jacob's pooping scene. Mr. Wheatley obviously has a dark sense of humor, and it's interesting to me that most of the reviews of this movie don't touch on how funny it is at points, especially the pantomime stuff that goes on in the background when foreground characters are talking. So on the one hand, this could just be a gag. On the other hand, this could be representative of some meta kind of "constipation" for Jacob. I'm not sure. Thoughts?

3. Before the mushrooms are consumed (when Cutler is leading the troupe to the ale house), there's a sequence where Cutler tells everyone to duck down into the grass, and he walks off screen. Jacob follows momentarily, leaving Friend and Whitehead to exchange some bits about their past. Is that _really_ all this was, an excuse to have that exchange? It's a very odd pause in events, but I can't attribute any further meaning to what Cutler and Jacob may have been doing besides what they said (checking out some disturbance over yonder).

4. Extending from #3, during that conversation, Friend mentions not thinking about things before he puts his hands on them, and there are several shots that focus on - particularly - Whitehead's hands. So was #3 just to put this concept out there so that the imagery from #4 would have some meaning?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts. I'm not out to shout Right or Wrong to anything, so please feel free to voice whatever, even if it's that you think there was _no_ meaning to this stuff.
