Loved this film

I had never watched any Bollywood movies before however I was on a
plane and this was an option. I thought I would watch 15 minutes but I
was hooked from the start. Yes there was some suspension of disbelief needed but all in all there was great acting, great cinematography and beautiful location shots throughout, great story and beautiful stars. I might not fully understand the political and cultural references but that is what google is for I guess. The story was the hero :-) I will now be seeking out more diverse films to fill my repertoire and by the way your movie made an old American white guy cry on a plane.

Good to hear that you were able to enjoy the movie. It is one of the very few Bollywood movies that I also enjoyed.
As you said, there are a lot of cultural references that a non-Indian would not be able to understand. Even Google cannot not help you since they are so many and so subtle.

For example, when Krish goes to Ananya's parents' house for the first time, he was taken aback since it had almost no furniture - "as if someone had robbed a Punjabi's house but did not like the sofa and left it behind". The background is that the houses of most South Indians are very spartan when it comes to furniture and decor. On the other hand, most Punjabis like to embellish each and every corner of their homes. It goes with their generally loud and over-the-top nature.

It would be better if you can find an Indian friend to discuss it. Or, use the IMDB forums 
