The Tudors

Can anyone remind me of the connections (if any) of the characters in The White Queen and The Tudors (with Jonathan Rhys Meyer and Henry Cavill) as there seems to some connections between characters / titles? Thanks

Elizabeth Woodville married King Edward IV and they had a daughter who would become Elizabeth of York. Margaret Beaufort had a son who would become Henry the 7th. Henry the 7th and Elizabeth of York married and had, among other children, a son who would become Henry the 8th. Hope this helps!

That's really interesting. So how was the Henry Tudor in the finale related to Henry 8th (his father?) and was the Buckingham in this related to the Buckingham executed in the first two episodes of The Tudors?. Sorry to ask but I find this interesting now

reply

It is interesting! This time period is fascinating!

Yes. The young Henry Tudor in TWQ is Henry VIII's father.

Edward Stafford, the 3rd Duke of Buckingham, was executed for treason at the beginning of The Tudors (1521). He was the son of Henry Stafford who was also executed for treason in 1483 by King Richard III. Like father, like son I guess.

It can be confusing at times, but it's easy to remember that a title will always stay in the same family. If there is no heir to inherit, the title becomes extinct, but can later be resurrected by the ruling monarch.

I'm finding it quite intriguing. While not overly accurate, these two shows are like companion pieces to each other.

I'm recently getting quite interested in this subject

Can I urge you though to turn to some serious reading if you are interested in the period? Series like these bear only a passing resemblance to recorded fact.

I'm the clever one; you're the potato one.

Thank you for the link. I'll check it out

Yes, these shows are really barely accurate, but, they've piqued my interest in the era and I noticed some connections between characters names / titles in the two shows and got me wondering about the relations between the characters from the two shows. They almost follow on from each other

You've been a great help catching me up with the connections

reply

You're welcome! I'm so steeped in this stuff (been reading about it since I was about 10 - nearly 50 years!) that it's easy to forget that it can be confusing to people who are not familiar with it.

I've been engrossed in Tudor-era history since watching The Tudors. Normally my obsessions last for a few months, but this has been going on for years. I read everything I can get my hands on, both nonfiction and fiction, and watch everything from documentaries, movies, and miniseries (Wolf Hall was a favorite.) I'm planning a visit to the UK next year, and my one must-see is Hampton Court, although I'd love to do a full Tudor tour.

I'm saying all this simply to warn you what may happen if you begin to study the Tudors. I regret nothing!

reply

Just actually ordered Wolf Hall to watch next. Looking forward to it and the era is all so interesting

If you can squeeze it in your trip to England, I suggest a visit to Warwick Castle in Warwickshire. I found the place fascinating.

Nearly all the major players in the wars of the roses were cousins. It had been called the cousins war by phillipa gregory the author of the white queen.

The plantagent dynasty had rule england since the anarchy period that ended in the 1140's.

Edward III had several sons. His eldest Edward is known as the black prince(see the movie a knights tale for a fictional portrayal By james purefoy). The black prince had several brothers the important being lionel of clarence Edmund of Langley, and John of Gaunt.

The black prince died before his father and his young son Richard became king on his grandfathers death as Richard II.

Richard II was deposed by Henry of Lancaster, the son of John of Ghent because richard was a bad king according to the nobles. Lancaster did not have the best claim though as techincally the house of york had a better claim as a son of edmund of langley married a daughter of the second eldest son of edward III, lionel of clarence.

Henry of Lancaster is Henry IV, he was followed by his son Henry V(the hero of agincourt) and grandson Henry VI, the insane old King from the begining of the show.

Henry V died young and left a young french widow Katherine and a 6 month old heir Henry VI. katerine remarried in secret to a welshman named Owain Tudor and had to sons with him named Edmund and Jasper.Edmund was made an earl by his half brother and married Margeret Beaufort.

Margeret beaufort was a grandaughter of a bastard son of John of Gaunt Who had been legitimzed but kept out of the line of sucession by law.

When Henry VII married Elizabeth of York they brought the two main branches of the royal family back together.

Its very complicated and the show did not really explain everything well. There are some very good nonfiction books that cover the story my favorite is by Dan Jones but its not light reading.

Thanks to everyone for the historical background. I too loved The Tudors and Wolf Hall. Also, the first Hollow Crown series was excellent; I am looking forward to the second Hollow Crown series. I must admit, I did not know much about Edward IV and his brothers other than how Richard III took the throne.

The Duke of Buckingham in the White Queen is the father of the Buckingham who appears in the Tudors. The Buckingham in this is married t Elizabeth Woodville's sister, so Buckingham in the Tudors is the nephew of Henry VII's grandmother.

reply

Yes just like the Duke of Buckingham. The title became extinct in 1889 when Richard Plantagenet died without male issue.

Elizabeth Woodville, the main character in the series, played by Rebecca Ferguson, is Henry VIII grandmother.

Henry Tudor, who becomes King in the end of the series after beating Richard III at Bosworth Field, is the father of Henry VIII. He married Elizabeth's daughter, also named Elizabeth.
