First time watcher, is this show worth a binge watch

I'm hearing conflicting things on this show, I'm a huge fan of OZ and Wentworth and this show rated lower then both on IMDB. I kind of get the feeling this isn't as brutal or hard hitting as those shows and more comedic.

So what seasons are must see and any warnings on seasons I should be wary about, just in terms of quality drop or massive change in the shows tone.

It's the only Netflix show that I haven't given a watch too yet.

You're right that the show is not as brutal as OZ, and I haven't seen Wentworth so no opinion there. But as a whole the show is actually pretty good. It does have some comedic value to it but I think of it more as a character study, especially after the first season. It goes more into depth about the other inmates and how they came to be inmates. But for me, the season after the "inmates have taken over the asylum", (I think it was season 5? not sure) it kind of goes downhill. It introduces more characters and you don't really care about them because they weren't there from the start.

Thanks for reply. You should check out Wentworth, it's great especially the earlier seasons.

The first 2 seasons are the best. After that, it's hit or miss.

The first few seasons are really great. The quality goes down a little in the latter seasons, but still well worth the watch.

And then the final season... oh, boy. The sole focus on the final season seemed to be driving home the creator's and producers' stance on the modern American political climate. Don't get me wrong - there were still great moments and spots of really good writing in the final season, but the overall point of the show seemed to almost break the 4th wall to be about politics rather than focusing mainly on the conclusion of the stories of all your favorite characters. You still get the conclusions, but it could have been so much more if they would have focused a little less on checking the right political boxes and a little more on the heart and personal drama that the show had knocked out of the park in earlier seasons.

I couldn't get past the second episode of this last season. It was way too political and it wasn't entertaining or interesting anymore. I've watched this show since the beginning but this last season was horrible and unwatchable for me.

Don't blame you for a second. I have this OCD type of thing with films and tv shows, or else I would have been right there with you.

I always thought it was just so-so, I mostly watched because my husband liked it. I gave up on it in season 5? I think, the one where the prison riot stretches out for almost the whole season. To be honest, I just kind of skimmed season 6 and was going to give up until I read something that made me want to watch again (don't want to post too many spoilers). I'm glad I did. I thought the final season was excellent, I cried buckets.
