WTF was Kojima smoking when he made this open world.

This game have so much opened up space that is barren, bland, and lifeless that could have been used for a variety of smaller sandbox-style levels. You spend so much time riding from mission to mission which gets tiring. Seeng the same sand and rocky terrain with barley any animals sprinkled about. And nothing to do in those large areas. All of that wasted time and resources could have been used for smaller levels similar to Ground Zeros. With different locations, weather, enemy type, etc.

The Africa mission didn't even have the luscious jungle that was showed in the first gameplay that was released. Instead it had more flatlands with a few cluster of trees sprinkled about. And the Mother base was another big and wasted area with a confusing configuration.

On the positive side- I liked the day/ night cycle, weather effect with the rain and sandstorm. The customization. Multiple ways to infiltrate a base. The stealth mechanics for sneaking/ prone position, QCQ. The way the guards communicated.

I give Phantom Pain a 6.5 out of 10.

Agreed. If the story was better maybe I would've been okay with it but it was bland. I am playing Deus Ex Mankind Divided and its so much smaller but teeming with areas to explore. I wish they had gone this route than in the middle of the Russian Afghan War.... which was on hiatus during the game it seems.

I never really understood MGS story lines. I just have a general idea of the characters and what the story is trying to tell. Just too many long and confusing cutscenes In past games. I much prefer stealth games like Deus ex and Splinter cell that is easier to get into and understand.

It's not Open World. Calling this open world was a lie. It's just as linear as the previous MGS games, it's just that now the maps are larger. You still have to travel down a singular path with very little deviation. The amount of times I've gnashed my teeth in frustration just wanting to find a quicker path to get somewhere only to find that I was surrounded by giant, unpassable mountain walls lining the entire map in any particular stretch of the game is countless.

The map seemed large enough to be considered open world. Lots of big open spaces that is wasted with not much to do, except to wander around. I've also encountered the same problem with the mountains. I guess it was just a poorly designed map.

But my biggest gripe was that God dam mother base configuration. I couldn't progress through out some of the missions because I failed to capture guards to send them back to the base. Which is required to upgrade the Fulton system that is needed for some of the missions. So I had to go back and do side ops. And I'm still confused about the whole staff system crap.

You sound like you just started playing the game.

Open world means you get to play and experience the game at your own pace in any way you wish.

MGS V is very much open world. The maps themselves are utter sh!t, but that does not detract for the fact you can handle missions in a variety of ways and (unless specifically set) in nay order too.

MGS V is open world, its just an example of a terrible open world game.
