Why is Liv taller and Matt shorter?

Good movie, but something puzzled me. According to the net, Liv (Jessica) is 5'10 and Matt (Ted) is 5'11.5. Why did they portray Ted as a shorter guy compared to Jessica? I can only imagine the platforms used on stage to accomplish this, but this there a reason why they wanted to make Ted shorter than Jessica?
