The point OP made, was they didn't make $5K, they made $3K, as $2K of the $5K prize was stake money (Toby & Pete each paid $1K).
In the first race scene, there are ONLY 5 cars, 2 of those cars are Toby and Pete. The cars in that scene are 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1987 Porsche 944 S, 1969 Ford Torino GT, 1969 BMW 2800 CS and 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396 (All shown in this image http://cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/Need-for-Speed-Complete-Car-Guide-620x320.jpg).

Toby and Pete were on the same team, as I and others have pointed out several times, they would have staked $2K of the the $5K purse, meaning they (the team) would have only made a PROFIT of $3K. Toby and Pete being on the same team, in essence makes the race a 4-way split as the outcome for the team, is the same if either of them win.
So, when the characters in the movie announce "WE JUST MADE 5 GRAND", they had only in fact made 3. You arguing this point with your "Still more than 3 drivers" point, is basically demonstrating just how high you rank on the retard scale.
So the OP's point remains valid and you're still an idiot for not grasping it. In future I'd recommend you stay away from problems that require basic mathematics and literacy, as you seem to struggle with both.
