Some suspense of disbelief is necessary, but...

Obviously in a Christmas movie about a woman who's dating Santa Claus's son, some suspense of disbelief is necessary. However there's always one thing that's just completely unreasonable and just kills the movie. Here, it was in the very beginning, when Peter proposes to Alex, one of her first responses is "I'll have to change all my legal identification to your last name!"

What scientist in her right mind would change her name just as her career was getting off the ground, especially with all the hype in the beginning with the gamma ray discovery?! What is the obsession with women changing their last name no matter what in movies like these?

It's probably something her extremely rigid father forced her mother to do even though she was a professional therapist who might have been established prior to their marriage. So she would expect to do it just as her mother did. Did you notice he was taking the credit for their discovery anyway? Or at least partial credit since his name was on the building.

Just because she's a scientist doesn't mean she's a feminist.

That is actually why I came to the forum, it was so incredibly stupid. No one has the change their name, it is total *beep*
