La Pirogue

The pirogue is a long vessel used by fishermen. It is powered by an engine and rudder for steerage but no sails. It's length and depth make it good for transporting migrating Africans across the Atlantic to the shores of Spain in the hope of a dream of a better economic life for those brave, or foolhardy, enough to make the trip and those they are leaving behind.

The film is political in every sense of the word but the characters and their dignities in suffering and death, for some, are not compromised in serving a political end.

Aside from convincing performances from the cast - and it wouldn't surprise me to find that some of them are not actors - there is a great soundtrack that accompanies the emotional seas of the film. The ending is very bitter with just a little bit of sweetness and I cried.
