Just hanging in his hotel room and talking to the people back in the states that he screwed over by giving everything up.

Yeah.. thats basically what happens, nothing. I was waiting for at least, an explanation for why an obviously successful person would suddenly abandon everything; career, marriage (a rocky one), children; but in the third act the story veers off in a strange direction. I understand symbolism here but that felt contrived.

I have exactly the same thoughts as you. The "meeting" was a perfunctory two-minute affair which produced almost no discussion about the future direction of their respective lives. It occurred at the end of the movie after either had made a decision about their lives.
