Black James Bond

Or black Liam Neeson?

I thought he had a good chance at breaking tradition and being signed as the first black Bond but after this film, I'm not sure Stringer Bell can pull it off.

I think Black Liam Neeson more appropriate, since they both displayed "Reckless and Irresponsible" to the people they work with.

I had the opposite reaction... up to now I couldn't get behind the idea of a black Bond. I know that Idris Elba is the name most often tossed around for the role and after seeing this I could see him as a 'rough around the edges' Bond a la Craig and less 'international playboy' Bond a la Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan.

I agree, he won't be the first black bond after this film. For me it's because he's way too tall and he looks awkward and gangly when he doing action scenes

That's what stuck out for me in this film. The action scenes were either badly choreographed or maybe he was drunk when he filmed them. He's a pretty suave guy, Idris, but he can't do action as I've noticed in other stuff he's done as well. I guess that would rule him out for future Liam Neeson type gigs as well.

I like Idris Elba a lot. But as a Brit, one must understand class.

James Bond is likely ex public school, middle class, well educated, and importantly have an RP (received pronunciation) accent. All things I'm afraid Idris isn't. Sure he's not hard cockney, but he definitely has a local London accent, and nothing about him smacks of coming from the British middle class that purvey the James Bond version of our secret service.

It actually has nothing to do with being black, as there are many fine black British actors with more middle class traits and soft RP accents who could possibly play the part. Just a mischaracterisation of his personal suitability to play it.

1) I'm opposed to the idea of a black James Bond: seems silly; if you want a Black secret agent, create one. Ian Fleming had a different idea; not interested in another version.
2) Idris Elba can put on any accent he wants. Many people had NO IDEA "Stringer Bell" was British.
3) "Mischaracterisation" is a non-issue. . .that's why it's called "acting."

Conclusion: He's talented enough, but James Bond is white. There's a great story told by a journalist about meeting Ian Fleming, and telling him he reminded him of one of the characters in the books. Fleming looked pleased, until he realized the guy Wasn't talking about Bond. Clearly, he molded him after himself.

"Personally I hope they make all the gods black and change it from Valhalla to Valholla!"
