Stories We Tell vs Capturing the Friedmans (2003)

That was the documentary I kept thinking of while watching Stories We Tell. While I liked Stories We Tell (but respected it more than loved it), Capturing the Friedmans riveted me more while watching it and stayed with me longer after the viewing.

You really think this is comparable to Capturing the Friedmans? I haven't seen this yet, but I didn't get the sense this would be nearly as poignant as the friedmans. Have you seen Dear Zachary? I'd compare that to the Friedmans.. that one will stay with you... go, watch it now... no googling or deep messageboarding!

It reminded my of Ross McElwee's documentaries, especially "Bright Leaves".

The big difference is that Stories We Tell doesn't present the truth as elusive as in Capturing the Friedmans. In the former there's no argument about the basic facts, just a variety of perspectives and experiences, while in the latter there's not clear conclusion, even at the end, as to the events themselves.

 I was reminded of "Capturing the Friedmans" too!

Anyway, I thought "Stories" was well-edited but really dull. "Friedmans" is MUCH better.

Agree 100% with your take. Polley should work on a documentary about an interesting subject!
