Appropriate for children?

I am really interested in watching the movie, and am wondering if it appropriate for children (subtitles aside.)

Is this a roughly PG or PG-13 movie? Any questionable material for younger audiences? (I have a 9 year old and a 12 year old)

Thanks!

reply

I'd say it would be a PG-13 due to some language. I'd say the movie is perfectly fine for a 9 or a 12 year old as long as they don't mind the subtitles. It's fantastic btw, charming and light hearted coming of age story about friendship. Highly recommended.

Great, thanks so much- that's exactly what I was hoping to hear! Looking forward to seeing the movie, the trailer looked great.

light language (no f-bombs) and some sexual situations of the teen angst variety (no touching though). perfect for introducing the 12 year old to punk rock and foreign films; if the 9 yr old can keep attention, it should be fine.

There actually are a number of F-bombs, as well as several uses of the C word in one scene. I agree with the other posters on this thread that it is a wonderful movie for older kids, but just be aware that the F word does appear in the subtitles multiple times.

i watched this movie yesterday and thought that i could easily watch this with my 11 y.o. son, that it could be interesting to him. and i'm quite severe about watching movies too early.

reply

Ok, I'm not a parent so theoretically I couldn't give any sort of opinion about this matter, but... do you guys really think your children don't listen foul language in their day-by-day? Or they don't see or do anything sexual in their lives yet? Or even worse, they don't know anything about sex?

Well, let's wait till I have my own kids and see if I'll keep thinking the same way. I hope I will. I don't want to become an old square narrow-minded prick.

reply

Not sure what your point is? No one in this thread said it was inappropriate for kids. I asked because the movie is unrated, so I had no idea about the content.

reply

Interesting that you are assuming I'm a narrow-minded prick based on what I said. I actually watched "Once" with my young children, though it has multiple F bombs. At no point did I ever make a value judgment about whether or not it's OK. I simply pointed out a basic fact, to set the record straight.
You know nothing about my parenting or about me, for that matter. So maybe you should hold off on the name-calling.

Too late.

So have you watched this movie yet, with or without your children, and what did you think? Was your 9-year-old able to read the subtitles, or did you have to recite them? I'd say almost any film that encourages children to read is a decent choice, and this one seems relatively mild in terms of language and certainly content.

Before I was old enough to see an R-rated film I was interested in, I'd read the novel instead. Novels are readily available to minors who seek them out, and they are often more explicit than the film. If someone is able to read and comprehend the narrative, I think they are mature enough to digest the content.

My 9-year-old liked it. I had no problem with showing it to her.
Again, to reiterate, my statement was not a judgment of right or wrong. Not at all. It was simply an accurate statement of fact that it has several F words. Which it does.
Remarkable that everyone assumes I'm making a statement which I never made.

In Sweden the classification is appropriate for all ages, but we're not that concerned with cursing. I guess it would get at least a PG 13 or maybe even an R-rating in the US due to language and underage drinking.
