Ron Livingston's character (Adrian) keeps popping up in the movie

When Abby (DeWitt) is taking her groceries to the car, Livingston can be seen walking across the frame.

Later, When Abby is crying in her car, Livingston can be seen after the car takes off, eating chinese food.

I know the director toyed with the idea of Adrian's character not being real, but why was he not simply edited out if the idea was scrapped. What is the reason for his recurrence?
