What's the "True Story?"
It said it was based on a true story. Does anybody have an idea what story that was?

shareI was about to get snarky and say "just google it," but then I did, and apparently you're not he only one asking this question. The closest I could find to an answer (granted, I didn't spend much time, so there might be a real answer for someone who has more than 3 minutes to spare), was a reference on a page for a geocache near where they filmed it. Apparently a disappointments room was a room, usually at the top floor of a house, where a disabled child would be kept. I've heard of people locking up their disabled children, so I'm sure there are dozens of stories this could be "based on." Maybe a better googler than I can find the one where a house is supposedly haunted because it contained such a room.

You are right about that.
I work in a developmental facility govern by the state and we get patients that have been locked up in rooms... It's almost horrifying every time we hear about a new resident.
I came across the story of a mentally handicapped boy who was kept away in the Lemp mansion in Missouri. Just Google Lemp mansion. It's supposedly haunted by a monkey faced boy.
shareIf you look up Wentworth Miller and his background you may find yourself close to an answer to your question.
shareOr, you could just tell us. :D

From what I've read, his troubles are no worse than what thousands deal with daily...quite a few people have issues with weight gain, suicide attempts, sexuality, etc.
Unless his parents locked him in a room when he was young, I can't see how his background is where this story was pulled from...

Agreed.
shareIt's not really based on a ''true story'' it's just a marketing line horror films have been using since the Blaire Witch came out. This though is obviously fake, they shouldn't even have bothered because in the end you'll just piss off the audience by lying.
LOL you sadists https://youtu.be/6Zxy_dScjsM
There is no "true story". The trailer says "based on true events" . Which means there were houses built with what were called "Disappointment Rooms", where undesirable family members would be hidden away. This movie itself is not a true story.
it rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again

The true story is that disappointments rooms did exist. The real story of this movie will go unnoticed by just about everyone. Take away the room they didn't know exist what do you have? Family moves to new town to start their lives over. Unfortunately Postpartum Psychosis follows you everywhere you go. Doesn't matter if you have a secret room or not. Postpartum Psychosis includes Delusions or strange beliefs, Hallucinations, feeling very irritated, Hyperactivity, Decreased need for or inability to sleep, Paranoia, Rapid mood swings, Difficulty communicating.
shareSeveral of those stories also sadly remind me of Genie.

A few years ago and HGTV episode of “If Walls Could Talk,” featured new homeowners Laurie and Jeff Dumas who bought a home in Rhode Island and discovered that Laurie’s dream home was hiding some dark secrets in the attic. The house turned out to have belonged to a prominent Judge.
When they went exploring in the attic, they discovered a strange room that was a partitioned off from the rest of the space. The space was dead-bolted off and the interior’s entire floor was made of metal. When Laurie went looking for answers at the local library, she received an answer that would have chilled me to the bone. Someone informed her that she had a disappointments room.
Laurie learned that, a disappointments room was somewhere that some families would imprison a child who was born with disabilities. These families would keep these children locked away from sight. In this case a Judge had locked away their daughter Ruth, inside of the room.
“The Disappointments Room” is a retelling of that true story. Director, D.J. Caruso’s (Disturbia) film revolves around, couple Dana (Kate Beckinsale) and David and their 5-year-old son. When Dana discovers a small mysterious locked room in the attic, things begin to go bump-in-the-night and Dana begins to doubt her sanity.

It's been done before and I'm sure the Changeling is better. Horror fans looking for something actually worth a crap WATCH OLDER MOVIES. The 70's and 80's were have some real gems hiding if you can pry yourself off of netflix :P
The Changeling was meh ....
I remember seeing it high school. Besides the rubber ball bouncing down the stairs by itself, I don't remember much of anything else from that movie. Might be worth watching it again. I like George C Scott. Is that the movie that starts off with the car crash in the mountains?
Here's the true story directly from Laurie Dumas: https://youtu.be/OazYDbJQiRw
Absolutely nothing to do with a haunting or a ghost.
