Whats all the fuzz about?

i'm really angry. angry with all these people that think what happened was a big tradegy. To make myself clear. I don't want to make fun of the dead climbers. For the close ones it is always hard to loose a loved one. That is sad, true. BUT CMON; you dont walk willingly without need into a DEATHZONE!!! with chilling degrees and not enough oxygen to breath and then be surprised if people get killed. that is so absurdly dumb. wanna risk your life for nothing? fine, do it, but don't complain if you actually get hurt. i really can't feel the drama.
you wanna see drama? there is so much in this world. people that have no choice at all, that are forced to survive every day because they have no food or are confronted with war. billions of people exist without having the security to live another day in peace or freedom or health. and i should be sorry for these westener tourist who have nothing else to do than wander arround in the most dangerous and hostile environment the earth has to offer - FOR FUN?

Yes but with all extreme sports there is possibility of tragedy. I enjoy skiing but their is a slim chance I could have a freak accident. Granted climbing one of the highest 8000 Metre peaks is something totally different and I personally would not dream of attempting something like that. These climbers see it as an achievement just like you would passing your driving test or graduating university, however on a more challenging level. The real fact of the matter here is that these where experienced climbers, they chose to do this because they believed they had the skills to conquer it. What happened on K2 could have been avoided.

1. Sorting out which teams would be allowed to go up first to stop the traffic of climbers.

2. Turning around when the first man slid down the mountain to his death.

I don't think climbers are surprised that people die trying to summit these peaks. That has been a factor from the start of the last century. However when you are at high altitude your brain and body do not function as well and your decision making skills are not as good.

You talk about the need to survive a lot of local Sherpa's depend on the mountains to get income they escort people safely up the peaks fixing ropes. That is their livelihood and that is how they survive. I find your lack of compassion disturbing. These are still human lives, you act like they deserve to die high on a mountain slope. Nobody deserves to die well with the odd exception. it's not like these people are murderess, they just enjoy seeking adventure and pushing each other to the next limit.

NO matter what you say people will always push the boundaries.

this 2008 K2 disaster, the 1996 Everest disaster and the recent 2013 Nepal earthquake are very tragic and the people who lost there lives should not be ridiculed for something they enjoyed doing, no matter how foolish you think they where.

I don't think the original poster is acting like climbers deserved to die, nor are they ridiculing anyone. I think what the poster is trying to express is some perspective from outside the bubble. Everyone here knew the risks, and gambled with their own lives (and by extension the lives of their loved ones), for what is essentially an unnecessary, self-serving physical challenge that would not be possible without a handful of privilege. When compared to the people that die everyday facing challenges they did not ask for, there is a natural disconnect that should make you wonder what all this was for.
