1910?

I don't think the movie takes place in 1910.

If they're talking about Aunt Elizabeth, it would be earlier in time. The clothes themselves are pretty much not past 1900 (huge leg-of-mutton sleeves).

And the younger Elizabeth's sister talks about bobbing her hair, something not thought of until the '20s. Plus, there is abundant electricity. The younger Elizabeth seemed fascinated by her aunt, as if she were alive decades ago, if it's only 20 years at most.

Why would they need a journal of Aunt Elizabeth? If it were only 20 years ago, wouldn't she still be alive, or a photograph available or written correspondence? I guess the family hated her since her journal was behind other books in the bookcase.

in the city, that would have been the case,,,,,probably not to the town that she went to, but yes, in the city, it would have been abundant by then..

on Murdoch mysteries, he uses electricity all the time, and that's only taking place in 1901....so

The younger sister explained that she stole the diary out of her parents' safe, and she is the one who hid it behind her bookcase, since she had "borrowed" it without permission. Maybe the aunt died and they wanted to keep the journal in the safe for sentimental purposes?

when the girls were outed for having the journal, Elizabeth asks her dad what happened to their aunt and he said he doesn't know.

The whole thing was a narrative nonsense. Why keep a diary from your sister locked in a safe? It wasn't exactly Lady Chatterly's Lover! It was just a little diary of her experiences.

And then you say, well, she just disappeared? This father is one of the richest men in Canada. He couldn't send out a possie of Mounties and Pinkerton men to find his sister? He's a guy who could have moved heaven and earth to find her.

The whole thing made absolutely NO sense.

And the movie made no sense. Just hit and missed a few plot lines, then ended.

I'm utterly baffled as to why they even made this movie at all. It wasn't needed. If they tried to use it as a "lead in" to the tv series, it created more confusion.

The tv series began in a good place, explained how Elizabeth got to the West country and it went from there.

And what in the heck was Jean Smart doing talking gibberish in some kind of utterly intelligible Irish (??) accent!!! She had ONE SCENE? Jean Smart? Sounded like she was drunk.

This film was a train wreck.

I've seen the tv series. That Mountie, like Shane, ain't never comin' back. SHANE!
