mike the driver

I'm confused by this part of the movie.

DeNiro says let me drive say you are sick, he feels a bit odd but ends up doing it.

The next day no one can get a hold of him, I guess it was his way of quitting?

It made no sense, the stupid movie kept trying to make us think Jules was some sort of tough boss, but she really wasnt at all.

Mike was embarrassed that folks at work now know he's an alcoholic. So, he basically quit but didn't want to talk to anyone about why so just avoided their calls.

What? I must have missed this completely. When did it happen?

It's called reading between the lines.

Just because you don't see something, or something isn't explained, you can infer different things.

For example, you never saw Robert DeNiro's character go to the bathroom. You can assume that over the months that this film is portrayed, that his character did indeed poop a least a few times. You can infer this because it's a natural part of life, and you know that people do that stuff. You can equally infer that a person who has been 'caught out' in an embarrassing situation would avoid dealing with it. Alcoholics (indeed all *aholics) have a reputation for hiding their addictions.
