Deserves to be on that list of Movies About Nothing

Movies that go on to no purpose and scene after scene is trite and vaporous. Movies that don't seem to know what to do with themselves.
Besides The Intern I'd nominate the following:

Magic Mike XXX
Falling in Love
Breezy
Heartburn
Night of Dark Shadows
The Godfather II
John and Mary
Making It
Darling Lili
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure
Children of the Damned
Ruby
The Exorcist II
In Like Flint
Sweet November (1968)
Pretty Maids All in a Row

Big fat Greek wedding.

Pitch Perfect 2

reply

Citizen Kane

reply

Maybe CK, but it at least had style and was compelling unlike the movies I listed. A lot of movies are about nothing but have style, interesting characters and scenes i.e. Pulp Fiction.

reply

Snakes on a Plane

reply

I could not watch Pulp Fiction. Maybe becuase those kinds of characters and scenes turn me off, whereas I found the Intern charming. Different strokes. Maybe that's why I never got PF. Nothing seemed to happen for any reason!

reply

Citizen Kane alongside The Intern and In Like Flint, etc.? This is a bad joke, right?

reply

No, it's a good one.

reply

Whatever.

reply

The Man from UNCLE
Ted II

reply

Entourage
Sex and the City II

reply

The Other Woman

Sex and the City II is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I don't even remember what the plot was about, but I do remember wishing I had wasted my time doing anything but having just watched the awfulness that was that movie.

reply

goodness me that is nonsense. this is about an intern, Godfather 2 is a masterclass its about the godfather , the 5 families, the mafia, the history of don corleone past and present and the massive deals they do with huge corporations.......michael were bigger than us steel

reply

Godfather II is a better film than The Intern it's well directed...but for me too many scenes of plotting, double crossing, family drama ...it's more without acquiring depth or characters who evolve for over 3hrs. It almost doesn't exist apart from the original to which it is a prequel/sequel. It's by no means a bad film or as dull and colorless as The Intern.

reply

Agreed. Some movies are episodic and therefore don't need to have moments... but this clearly has a linear narrative structure, and yet is still colourless... Even the one 'event' (the affair) he gives her advice about it, and she winds up going against everything he said... so his input meant nothing!

Saw the Godfather saga on HBO which combines the 3 films by arranging them in chronological order and most of the scenes from II felt redundant. Well made but it's more plot and plotting w/o any real point. Besides DeNiro isn't convincing as the young Brando. Again nothing to do with the quality of performance.

Is there a list of "Most dense IMDB users"? You deserve to be on that list too...

reply

It is really sad watching Robert de Niro in this movie. I totally agree with you. That black and white scenery matching the black and white clothes spices the nothingness of it all.
Sad. De Niro didn't deserve that.

If it belongs in such a list, then that's not exactly a bad thing. Not including any of the movies the OP listed (minus Godfather 2), I'm certain The Intern wouldn't mind being mentioned alongside movies like Taxi Driver, American Graffiti, Reservoir Dogs (arguable), The Breakfast Club, The Thin Red Line, The 400 Blows, Eraserhead, Lost in Translation, Richard Linklater films, Glengarry Glen Ross (all acclaimed films). The Intern isn't as great as those, but I guess it's in good company.
