Elle Fanning Says Ben Affleck’s ‘Live By Night’ Will Arrive In December

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. made a very interesting move on their release calendar, sliding Ben Affleck‘s Prohibition-era drama “Live By Night” up from a previously planned October 20, 2017 release date to January 13, 2017. The new slot was more or less where “American Sniper” did gangbusters numbers for the studio a couple years back, and many couldn’t help but notice that the new date was in spitting distance of the awards season. And while WB hasn’t yet officially confirmed an Oscar qualifying run in December, it sure seems like it’s going to happen.

Chatting with WWD, the film’s co-star Elle Fanning let it slip that “Live By Night” would be arriving before the end of 2016. “That’s coming out in December, at the end of this year. That was incredible because [Ben] wrote it, he directed it and he’s in it. I had scenes with the director, you know? It’s intimidating. But I would love to direct, so it was cool to see how he works,” she said.

Also featuring Zoe Saldana, Sienna Miller, Brendan Gleeson and Chris Cooper, and based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, “Live By Night” centers on Joe Coughlin, the son of a cop who finds himself slipping into a life of organized crime. As he climbs the ladder of the underworld, he journeys from Tampa to Cuba, encounters various dames, lowlifes and more in a tale of revenge and redemption.

So, it looks like this fall will be all the Affleck you can handle, with the actor also appearing in “The Accountant” opening on October 14th. And if “Live By Night” is indeed coming in December, I would wager that AFI Fest premiere — just like “American Sniper” — would be a pretty good bet to take.

Great news. It means the film is ready and WB is confident enough to set it up for Oscar season.

Yes, if it's really true, then it's excellent news!

However, I think Elle Fanning's statement has to be taken with a grain of salt. Because she also has another movie called 20th Century Women coming out at the end of December. So there is a small danger that she maybe just confused the release date of both movies.

But I am almost sure that her statement must be accurate. Even if the worst case scenario of Live by Night being Affleck's first bad movie as a director is really true, they would surely given him like a March release date in that case. Instead of completely humiliating him with a January release date and without the chance of being eligible for the Oscars. Specially now after Warner Bros seems to be so commited to work with Affleck for the DC Universe.

Yup, looking forward to it.
Plus it's just received an R rating just a few days ago.

I can't wait, i'm sure Affleck will deliver. This year i haven't seen many noteworthy films that may get an Oscar nomination, Live by Night is looking in with a chance. However, of course while more Oscar orientated films will be released, i can see this winning best picture.

This isn't a mud hole... It's an operating table. And I am the surgeon

Really hope this is true. Although I was confident the Jan. release date was ala American Sniper, there was a small chance it was because they didn't have faith in the film and it sucks. I really want this to be good, as Affleck is my favorite director, and Lehane my favorite author.

Now where the heck is the trailer?!?

It could be a mistake.

I don't know if they would want The Accountant and Live By Night released that close together.

What do you mean? In either case the release date of both movies would be 2 1/2 or 3 months apart from each other. That's not close in any way.

Splendid. Also I think I flagged you by mistake. Sorry.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
