The sherifs daughter fate (spoiler)

The detail that the Sherifs daughter was found dead in her dad's bed. Was that suppose imply sexual abuse ?

reply

She committed suicide. Think it says in the book she slashed her wrists. Been a while since I read it

reply

I think there was sexual abuse because the daughter said something about her father acting like she was his wife and then afterward all he did was sit around and say repent all the time. I took that to mean sexual abuse.

reply

I don't think he abused her. HE was just so distraught at his life falling apart. His brother in law got killed due to his betrayal, his wife knew and took his son away. He gets his daughter back but she's an ex drug addict who shows her shame in revival tents, for the whole world to see.

Then it made him just wander around the house in nearly comatose state, and she had had enough and slashed her own throat on his bed so he would find her.

In the book it's made clear he abused her. Joe even has a fight with him about it after she dies. Also her death was more graphic with her cutting her genitalia on her father's bed which also implied she was abused.

there was nothing in the movie to suggest sexual abuse

so many movies, so little time

She does say something at one point about her father "touching his daughter as if she were a wife", or something like that. I found it a bit puzzling, I am really not sure what it was supposed to mean.

reply

Wikipedia says he abuses her in the book, so that was what that line was about.

reply

No, what she actually said was that her father couldn't handle the fact that men had touched her the way he used to touch his wife, and worse. That doesn't indicate him abusing her, but not coping well with the fact that she grew up and had sex.
