Coughlin's automatic shotgun?

Or just what the **** sort of weapon was he blasting away with at and around the 1:45 mark? The previews made it look like he was using some sort of auto-shotgun, thus does the movie, but did rapid-fire shotguns exist during that point in time?

They sure did. Browning invented the Auto-5 in 1898 and it was in mass production by 1900. Glad to give you an answer before IMDB kills the boards. :(

I'm pretty sure it was a BAR...Browning Automatic Rifle...an M1918 possibly. Which was first produced in 1918, so it fits the time period. And the thirty-aught-six round def packs a wallop. Loud weapon too. Couldn't imagine hearing that thing going off indoors like that, holy smokes!
