Zoya VS Kundan

Both seemed wrong and both seemed right to me at places.
Who do u think was more wrong or more right?
I mean was it right for Zoya to fix Kundan in the end?
Was it right for Kundan to expose abhay and get him killed?
Was zoya not using Kundan after returning back from Delhi inspite of knowing that he was in Love.

Sorry if I am not clear not all that great at writing these kinds of things and warning heavy spoilers

I have my own view for this. I personally loved the movie as well as the characters because they were realistic no one is flawless and neither are Zoya or Kundan.

Kundan first, to me his character is a guy who is run completely on emotion and feelings and therefore ruled by his heart more often then his mind. Honestly his love to me in the movie is the purest form of love depicted here. His character is totally devoted to Zoya after he has laid eyes on her. And his love is not just a crush its legitimate and lasting, as evidenced by the fact he waits 8 long years for Zoya to come back over which time she has forgotten him and moved on.

Now to his decision making

Kundan acts based on his heart not his mind so when he charged into Zoya's wedding and exposed Jasjeet/Akram as not being a muslim to her family I felt this was justified within his character and was a flaw he had. He made a mistake which he would repent for the rest of the film. Kundan acts directly out emotion here, the very reason he was given for rejection, Zoya was willing to try to find a way around for someone else, here he had an impulse reaction which he would really regret.
His actions afterwords he tries to make things right but unfortunately Jasjeet dies.

Zoya on the other hand is a character who thinks with her mind before her heart and actually has more flaws and selfish ways then the other characters. I think she absolutely used Kundan with no regards for his feelings for her when she had him basically humiliate himself and put his own neck on the line for her. But at the same time I do think Zoya did genuinely love Jasjeet but she was unable to understand anything but her desires at that point in time.

And for the conclusion, to me both Zoya and Kundan had Jasjeets blood on their hands during the conclusion and both would have to repent for it. Zoya because she took a risk the way she did and called him into danger, and Kundan because in a moment of shock and bitterness he let his emotions take over and made a huge error. But at the end Kundan as throughout the movie has devoted himself to do something if anything for Zoya not expecting anything in return, and honestly if she had asked him to shoot himself in the head he would have gladly done it because he both loved her with all his heart and also believed himself to have been the cause of her unhappiness and therefore he left it up to her to do with him what she would. For Zoya to choose to kill Kundan the way she did was a mistake and a sin/flaw on her part, but she soon realized that Kundan had taken it on knowing full well what he was walking into and she regretted her decision.

Kundan was a full heart 100% romantic and blind lover, while Zoya was more thoughtful and practical, both of them have their flaws and both of them have their strengths. If comparing the two though Kundan was the one who comes out on top, but the beauty of it is the fact that they both have flaws and their actions shape who they are much like people like us. They are true to life characters with depth, fears passions and flaws

Personally loved this movie and though I was conflicted about it for a while the end is great too.

A great analysis, and i also had thought the same lines while watching the film.

Perfect Analysis for me...good write up KoshPatel

Well put 'KoshPatel756-7'.
Personally I thought that Kundan defiantly came out on top no questions asked because his intentions were very pure and for the sake of 'love'. Although I didn't understand why he did love that b**** so much she really did not deserve it.
At many times in the movie I though that Zoya liked playing with people are actually hated on Kundan for his popularity (and his ability to easily sincerely talk to people). She was a bitter person.

reply

Well its certainly a very subjective question.
What i gather was Kundan was a very brave, daring and naive boy living in small town. He fell in love with a pretty girl who was way out of his league.

He was brave enough to do whatever he wanted to with great conviction, but just not smart enough to judge repercussion of his actions.

That is why he cut his nerve, drove scooter into river, convinced Zoya's father for marriage, spoiled the same marriage, nearly saved Jagjit, carried zoya all the way to Punjab, worked at a tea stall. He did all this for sake of his love and most of the time, in good spirit.

Even in case of him spoiling the marriage, Zoya used him to her advantage time and again and despite all his show of love and honesty, she even lied to him about Jagjit's cast. This probably more or less explains why he broke her marriage (and in all honesty, even he did not except it will end up with Jagjit's death).

Whereas zoya was a smart girl and definitely knew how to take control of a situation. She blatantly ignores kundan when she returns from Delhi but later recognizes him, when it became certain he is not going to go away. She then used him to broke her marriage and then lied to him about Jagjit's cast.

Though Jagjit's death could be attributed to Kundan, but it was Zoya's family who beat him to death, not kundan, who in fact made every effort to keep him alive, so Zoya's resentment against Kundan was understandable but certainly not justifiable.

To my understanding Zoya was wrong all along.

Zoya used kundan to the core which he realises later, even tho he goes to stop her wedding its bcuz of the sense of responsibility he felt towards d father since he had convinced him for d wedding. And btw Zoya is responsible for the death of both male leads. That's very clear.

reply

I understand that Kundan got the father to agree, but after that he shouldn't have bothered them. It was clear he never stopped caring about Zoya, and planned his marriage just to spite her, hoping somehow things would turn his way. Which is why he jumped to stop the marriage when he learned about Abhay Deol's true identity. He was crying and cursing his fate right before it. I don't think he stopped the marriage because he thought he owed that much to her father. He couldn't give a rats ass about Zoya's father.

Should have just let them be and all of the mess could have been avoided. Its not all his fault though. Zoya also lead him on and used him to achieve her purposes.

In my opinion Zoya was not wrong at all for two reasons:

1) Kundan came out as an extremely irritating stalker. Bothering the poor girl at every step of her life even though she had no interest in him at all. I don't know why everyone on this board has sympathy with this extremely thin douche. I mean come on. Kundan should have been admitted to a mental hospital in the beginning of the movie and that should have saved a brand new scooter in a poor country like India where 6 kids ride a rickshaw to school.

2) Papa-looking Jasjeet aka Akram Zaidi was wrong in going to college at such an old age. It seemed he has been in the grad school for the last 20 years or so failing every year and wasting everyone's time and money. And Zoya's family beat him to death for changing his name? Really? Were they living in the 7th century? They should have beaten Kundan for ruining the marriage and letting their money go to waste.

Qufr I am not sure if you have been in India or have knowledge about how things work...

For point # 1: I don't see it as stalking ...what else one should do to try and get his love of life...I can say safely that this is how stuff works here...I don’t think in any scene Kundan was annoying Zoya...he was always trying to woo her....
Here for girls marriage is life long relationship and huge social phenomenon..before committing in love they will always make sure the person has right commitment and it’s not just short term attraction...I have seen cases in real life that girls expect stuff what Kundan did all time because they really want to test how genuine and serious before saying yes .....

Point # 2: Totally...there are many jasjeet in all and every colleges ....I don’t know why you counted figure 20...not everyone in college come to study...it’s absolutely very common ...you can see almost all politicians in India who are now cabinet ministers started politics from college/university...typically director shown mostly correctly in Delhi university all things happen as shown in film...

coming to beating again ...yes betraying girls parents any kind of cheating is big deal...again in Indian culture if you put your shoes in girls’ father, who right from her birth starts planning for her marriage and treats his life as sole mission of finding right husband and imagine you set up a marriage and someone cheats you right in your house ...I can’t explain you unless you grow up in India...however personally I am totally against the brutal beating and taking any kind of law in hand but I am not surprised it happened in movie at all.....

Don’t blog much and did it quick so sry for any linguistics...
strictly IMO

It was because of Kundan that the hornet's nest was stirred in the first place.
He fell in love. Secondly, the religions bias also played a big role. It seems obvious that Zoya killed both the men. Kundan was just doing his duty to expose Deol's true religion as he had pleaded Zoya's father to let them wed. Yes, Zoya used Kundan to the core and happy realization, this is a movie and the ending is true Bollywood ishtyle.

2nd half of the movie is quite random and not natural or satisfying for me..

Evil side of Zoya dominated but Kundan didn't do anything wrong, even by exposing Aslam's identity !!

I agree that both the leads were imperfect, flawed etc- i.e. much more human and relatable than characters in most Bolly flicks. Personally, I don't understand the hate towards Zoya while people still feel sympathy towards Kundan. From an (Indian) female perspective, I find Kundan's behaviour irritating and stalkerish. Don't want to get into broader issues, but this whole idea of constant harassment of women in India as "wooing" is gross and contrary to "popular belief", women don't appreciate it. So yeah, a lot of sympathy for Zoya being chucked in a situation where a passing teen romance comes back to ruin her life.

However, I definitely didn't agree with Zoya using Kundan without being honest about her boyfriend either but still doesn't justify glorifying Kundan's obsessive behaviour. I think the film walks a very thin line between obsession and "pure love". I'm not sure you can call Kundan's love "pure", because he was very much thinking about his own needs. Instead, Kundan's love is a great example of obsessive love and the fallout from it.

This actually reminds of Shakespearean tragedies where inherent flaws of the main "anti-hero" is what eventually leads to his fall/demise. If Kundan wasn't the obsessive guy that would fixate and hold onto a passing teen romance for 8 years, the entire story (and all the drama & death of Jasjeet) would have been very avoidable.

reply

i understand these flaws and all but a father who is a professor in college wouldn't he know a uprising politician in delhi...

i would say they both were same... emotions before logic. she wanted to fulfill jasjeet's dream but not through kundan...
kundan wanted to zoya to love him back or at least see her happy for wich he was will to sacrifice anything even a chance to be a leader or a girl who loves him very much since childhood..

Jasjeet is more wrong than zoya and kundan

A scene others overlooked- First scene when zoya returns from delhi. Makes a guy pickup luggage for talking to him for 2 hours. She says he needs to work for 200Rs<==>2hrs worth

She has applied same ideas with kundan. Talk nicely to kundan and get benefits. This proves that she is not a person with ideals and principles like jasjeet and ultimately questions her purity of love for jasjeet. It must be for popularity and power

She didn't even say jasjeet real name to kundan and she also makes jasjeet to do a drama. which says a lot about her way of doing things. Her way of life is not straightforward.

Kundan reveals jasjeet assuming jasjeet cheated zoya as a muslim. So its not his mistake.

Some girls feel stalking and kundan's rugged behavior in showing love is the cause for all turn over events in the movie. Well i don't blame them. That's exactly what men can expect from girls... Never accept mistakes

More than zoya, there are two persons who are more wrong.
1. Jasjeet who accepted the drama for zoya inspite of party's responsiblity. We truly lack good leaders. He destroyed everything for a girl!!!!
2. Kundan who loved zoya though she never deserved. I felt bindiya more beautiful than zoya. We all guys desire the one girl we can never get.
