Why Call it a 'Rags to Riches' Story???

Probably it's just marketing BS and hype. Lin's Father has a PhD and worked in Silicon Valley. That sounds more like a middle class upbringing to me. And opposed to many Black NBA players who really did come out of the ghettos, housing projects and 'off the streets' and such.

I have a feeling Lin's "rags" were more likely yuppie-ware, and purchased in 'Abercrombie & Fitch' at his local shopping mall.

In any case, with modern NBA salaries being so astronomical, basically you could say this same 'rags to riches' line about any NBA player, unless the NBA is recruiting from the Koch Brothers, Bill Gates, or Warren Buffet families.

Haters questioning the definition of rags to riches :
- you are here before seeing the movie just to hate
- it's hard to deny he faced and overcame discrimination, confirmation bias, and racism at every level of his basketball career
- his underdog story has very broad appeal to Americans of all backgrounds and races
- the hate against him is not dissimilar to that against other not commonly seen things like a white running back or a black president

Only California state HS player of the year, EVER, to receive zero d1 scholarship offers.
Takes Harvard to its best season in 70 years. Faces viscous racist taunts regularly. Goes undrafted.
Cut by 2 NBA teams who didn't really give him a chance. Sleeping on couches. About to be cut by NY but in his one opportunity saves the Knicks who were 8-15 at the time.

Real life Rudy, Rocky, The Express.
A lot of haters here or voting the movie down never even saw this movie yet..

Facing discrimination and being an underdog does not make you come from 'rags'. The term 'rags' comes from people who would wear rag-like clothes, and is often used a metaphor for being poor. The Animals song, "..I"m dressed in these rags, I'll wear Sable some day" is an example.

A similar movie is Rise and Shine, The Jay Demerit Story. A guy from Green Bay, WI path from high school soccer to the English Premier League and US National Team. This movie also does not qualify as 'rags to riches' as he was middle class, but the underdog theme is very similar.
