Just my take, but "rags to riches" is more about his status as a player, not about his family's status as he grew up. It would be hard for an NBA player to be more unknown or closer to his chance at an NBA career being over than Lin was right before that Nets game, after all the difficulty he had even getting that far. A few short months later, he was a household name with a multi-million contract. Rags to riches indeed.
And while he doesn't suck in Houston, I think the story of what happened to him last year stands on its own. Lin could have never played an NBA game again after the initial, white-hot Linsanity period ended, and it wouldn't have fundamentally changed or lessened the story, what was amazing/improbable about it, or the reasons why it resonated so strongly.
