Why even do this?

I love Berserk. I loved the serious, then I loved the manga and now I love this series of films.

Why did they even bother with this project if they weren't planning on venturing any further than the eclipse, which was already covered by the original series.

It's damn frustrating - I would've loved to have seen the black swordsman saga in the same full-length format.

reply

Where did you get the information they no longer continue past the eclipse?
Originally they intended to cover the entire manga series. That's what they always said, and still do. The opening sequence contains a lot characters from after the golden age arc. I think they'll go on as long as it remains successful. Who knows how long that will be. Even if they reach the ending, they'll probably skip 80% of the story, as they do already. Chronologically the black swordsman arc takes place after the golden age, before the conviction arc, so they could still do it. I won't keep my hopes up though.

reply

I feel the same.

reply

Actually, you can keep your hopes up because at the end of credits, the movie shows "This is only the beginning..."

the original plan was for six films, with the first three covering up to the eclipse. so the next three are venturing into material that hasn't been adapted yet. i suppose if they do well, we may even see another series. i would hate to just have the movies covering new material, because they cut a hell of a lot out for time constraints, and if i didn't already know the story, they probably wouldn't have been able to keep my attention. too much handwaving and missing character development in favor of action all the time (important stuff like griffith gay-whoring himself out in battle for doldrey, without which we end up with gaping plot holes). i really hope they slow down the pacing from here on.

reply

From what I remember they were planning on adapting the entire manga, even beyond just the three that had secured licensing. This adaptation has nothing to do with the other anime series, so they couldn't have simply started off where the other left off.

reply

I disagree, the original tv series covered most of the story minus a few minor details such as puck, wyald and skull knight, which could have been briefly covered through flashbacks with newer animation. Puck was irrelevant even in the new movies as plot development, while Wyald was missing again and his role was far more relevant. This leaves skull knight... but to rehash three movies just to include his character was unnecessary IMO. His warning to guts was irrelevant and his most significant role was when he saved guts and caska from the eclipse, but the tv series ended before then, so they should have continued and included him from there on. I appreciate anything Berserk, but these movies felt unnecessary when they should have continued past that and give us what we all wanted to see, even with the new animation, these movies were another cash attempt, but it could also bite them in the ass if they don't sell as well as a new series would have.

reply

sorry im new to berserk but i have a question for you. "His warning to guts was irrelevant and his most significant role was when he saved guts and caska from the eclipse, but the tv series ended before then"-- so are you saying the tv series did not cover the whole manga

reply

No. It only covered a small part of the first (The Black Swordsman) story arc, and the Band of the Hawk story arc, i.e. up to about volume 13 of the manga. Currently there are 37 volumes of the manga, so there is a lot more to come after that.

reply

I really liked that they included the Skull Knight at least a bit, whereas he was left out completely in the series. However, what I was really missing here (and what the series covered!) was more Immortal Zodd. I found especially him granting Guts his demon sword an important plot point. They even talked about Guts' special sword in this, but we don't get any deeper information about it - also he isn't even granted Zodd's sword, instead just keeps his original sword all the way through. - Then why did they even include the Zodd fight in Part 1?

reply

I'm a little perplexed by this comment. Zodd's sword was never even implied to be anything more than an unusually large sword in either the manga or the original anime. He threw it to Guts during the Battle of Doldrey to allow him to overpower the enemy commander. That's it. It is never addressed in any special way and is never seen again. And I've seen the movie twice, and they don't talk about any demon sword either. Hell, they don't even talk about Guts' signature weapon, the Dragonslayer, which is one of Berserk's most central elements.

Why include the Zodd character at all? Because he's one of the manga's longest surviving characters, and becomes a very central part of Griffith's character later in the story. Also, Zodd is the one who first gives Guts and Griffith a hint about the Crimson Behelit and the Eclipse.

reply

I never really understood what was so special about Wyald. Mostly he just slams the manga's brakes for nearly an entire volume, and there isn't anything particular to him that other characters couldn't do, aside from providing a really long boss fight. The only important thing about him is that he provides a few more detailed hints about the Eclipse: Griffith being the chosen one, being able to summon the Godhand and a quick exchange with Zodd that gives some insight into how apostles work. Other than that he could easily be written into a much more minor role or a smaller character.

Madhouse studio they should have done this. This trilogy is very disappointing

That post was made nearly a year ago with no word from anyone since then. I hope they are just busy doing other things and still plan on releasing them.

reply

I hope so , otherwise it was just a waste of time .Giving me hope for more berserk that i did nt already saw 4 time ( at least in that 4th time there is some new scene and glimpses of new characters ) .

You'd feel cocky too if you were full of myself.
