Personally, this is one of the best movies i have ever seen, and i wish i can find similar movies to this one, from a camera shooting perspective, camera angle and sightseeing style in a warm cities.
I will be helpful for my future short (or even full length movie) who knows.

Malick - The Tree of Life
Fellini - 8 1/2
Fellini - La Dolce Vita
its not that those films are entirely similar but there were similar elements, anyway you can't go wrong with any of those, i also would like to hear more suggestions.
Matteo Garrone - Reality
Different in many ways from "The Great Beauty," but also reflects modern societal decay and has a strong sense of place.
Fellini's Roma, a crazy, wonderful portrait of Roma.

It also includes interactions between the members of the family and Italian political, and cultural events in the mid-1960s --how these events shaped and influenced their lives.
