What was that??

I quit right after the naked chick banged her head to the wall. I mean, WTF was that?? Why would anyone do such a thing? And why were there spectators? Was it some sort of a deranged art? If so, boy the human race needs world war 3 as soon as possible. The decadence has become unbearable for me.

Too bad you stopped right there, since the following scene (Jep interviewing her) makes it clear the film satirizes such kind of self indulgent "performance art".

^ exactly what he said and the film gets much better as it moves on. My only issue with it is it lost some momentum in the intersection between the 2nd and 3rd acts. The cardinal and the garden party sort of went into la la land.

I don't think I've read of something THAT extreme. But as the other user said, the world is full of conceptual artists like that. The character is based on the woman who: A) Got naked for a video with Lady Gaga. B) Spent hours on a chair letting people look at her while she didn't change her expression (Shia LeBeouf copied this recently).

By the way, JEP later said that he thought the wall was made of foam.

It's based on performance artist Marina Abramovi?. She did a show at London's Serpentine Gallery (England) earlier in 2014. It was entitled "512 hours".

the artist is present

It was a satirical comment on the pretentiousness of such 'art' as the interview that followed made clear. The other scene with the little girl crying whilst splashing paint on a huge canvas was a similar comment.

It's not a movie for you. Period.

I find it interesting that there are so many dismissive comments on these boards. I like a good takedown as much as anyone, but this doesn't qualify. It's even less interesting than the original post. It also ignores the fact that everyone who enjoys movies considered more complex or subtle learned to enjoy them at some point.
