I don't understand the low score

As of August 2015 this movie has a 5.8 with under 800 votes. This is kind of curious to me because not only does the film have some well known and great actors but it's even on Netflix! It's strange how more people haven't seen it!

I myself thought it was great and gave it an 8/10. The script had some problems and some forced dialogue throughout but it definitely doesn't deserve the low score it got. The acting was great from the entire cast and the cinematography was really, really good.

I hope more people see this film and recognize it for what it is!

I'm curious as to why you would rate a film with script problems and forced dialogue throughout it an 8/10. Seems really high if a 10/10 film is perfect, no? I mean, you seem to understand the components of what makes film good or bad (casting, writing, acting, cinematography, etc.), yet your math doesn't reflect the flaws that you've pointed out. Unless you don't assign much weight to script problems and forced dialogue, then yes, I guess your rating is subjectively fair. Why not rate it 10/10 in that case? I would agree with the low score for a whole lot of reasons that I won't get into -- I rated it even lower -- but really, the most important thing is that it resonated with you. It doesn't have to resonate with others, so the low score reflects people recognizing it for what it is.

Well I think you answered your own question. The story and lead character did resonate me and I appreciated the way his depression was depicted. For me if there's some forced dialogue it doesn't break the film. If that was the case then I wouldn't like Nolan's movies. Most moviea have forced dialogue so I can't really hold it against this one.

I think that a movie should be rated on how it makes you feel, rather on the technical correctness or acting/good/bad/indifferent. To me the acting is good if you can resonate with the person s/he is trying to portray, that is success that you really get the character. in this movie, we understand the lost feeling most teens have trying to find out who they are, made more difficult by missing one of the more important components, your Dad. Not that I'm saying that everyone's teen years are better having parents to talk to, and for lots of kids parents are the enemy. But underneath it all growing up is more difficult without that solid foundation, which is what this story is about.
I'm sure everyone who reads this can relate to having had a difficult if not horrendous time as a preteen then teenager, it is part of the growing up experience, one that builds character and makes us who we are today

I couldn't agree more! Excellently put. There's a time and a place for technically sound films but simple and flawed films can still be rated highly.

I don't get it either this is a very good movie that deals with Depression and suicide survivors in a respectful way.
