I'm embarrassed for this show.

I thought for certain this show had to be written by a man, and then shocked to find it is written by a woman. Of course, after looking at Melissa Rosenbergs credits, it's no wonder this show is as horrible as it is ... what a waste.

#1 The rape subject. I don't have an issue with that being in a good story, or serving some purpose -- but here we go again. There just can't be any story about a strong female that doesn't revolve around her clawing her way back and rebuilding her life after rape. Cliche, cliche, cliche.

#2 Of course her female boss, a high-profile, powerful woman ... has to be lesbian, with a huge lesbian sub-plot.

#3 A huge, meat-head douchebag cop/spec ops male, banging her best friend, whom she butts heads with in a forced manner.

The list just goes on and on. Rubbish show that might have been interesting in the mid 90s, but even that's questionable.

That topic is focused on because of Kilgrave's prior relationship to Jessica. The show brilliantly shows how a woman who already has issues deals with the PTSD of being a rape victim. Yes, there's a lot more to Kilgrave's evil than just rape, but because of his relation to the main character, it gets more attention. And honestly, rape culture needs to be addressed more, especially in our current state.

I think it's great, of course no everything is for everyone so I respect your opinion.
The rape part, if you're looking at films in general then yes there are a lot of films where a female lead is rebuilding her life after rape.
However in the MCU this is important because Marvel has been fairly family friendly for a long time and now there's a new type of adult Marvel. It's been a criticism for many years now that all these heroes save people from being mugged or beat up but Spider-Man never comes across a woman being raped in NY when it'd be likely he would!
Jessica Jones not only tackles that subject but does it in a fantastic way! She's got super strength but it was mind control, it didn't matter how physically powerful she was, her mind couldn't stop her from being controlled and raped. It was a great way of bringing such a taboo subject into Marvel. Her trauma following the control brings a change to Marvel.
It's great that Spider-Man can save old ladies from being mugged, but to actually talk about rape in Marvel is a huge step which I think they handled great.
