Episode 8 - WHAT....THE...HELL??? (Spoilers)

The entire time you're waiting for this HUGE climactic conclusion to this season and what do you get?

A threat from the chicken king out in the woods
The girl became a nun, had a kid, faked her death and married groundskeeper Willie's son
Hays and West ended up killing two innocent people thinking they were connected to pedophilia
The brother was never murdered, it was an accident covered up by one eye Willy
No one knows how Hays wife died
No one knows why Hays daughter left the family for so long

Everyone's waiting the entire season for a connection to Season 1, waiting for Cohle to show up, waiting for some reference to Carcosa and the Yellow King and we get iced tea on the front porch and a happy ending....

GAHHHHH!!!!

reply

I share some of your frustrations; but I’m not sure we got a happy ending.
I think we got a non-ending. Like you (and Wayne) I wanted to learn more. And this ending left me wanting. But I can’t pretend it was not meaningful.
Julie’s story continues.
The case might continue through Wayne’s son - he kept the piece of paper after all, and might follow up. Or not.
Wayne’s story continues through his family, his grandchildren and his best friend by his side.
Wayne and his wife live on together in his endless cycles of memory, taking him back and forth through time - the flat circle from season one.
Wayne found everything he ever searched for - his family united and Julie Purcell. He found them all and yet... he doesn’t know it. He lost his memories and still found himself in them. He attained closure but he’s still looking for it. Per the last shot of the finale, he will always be on Recon in the intricate endless jungle of his mind.
Always searching. Always seeking answers. A true detective.

"Hays and West ended up killing two innocent people thinking they were connected to pedophilia"

I know they killed Harris James, but who's the other one?

reply

It is probably safe to assume that Harris James killed Tom and made it look like a suicide. It is also probably safe to assume that he killed Lucy, so he killed both of Julie's parents. He planted evidence that wrongly placed guilt on Woodard, and he covered it all up for a decade. In retrospect, Roland was right, Harris James should have been turned over to the police. Even Edward Hoyt could probably not save him at that point, but I suspect he'd have been able to not get implicated or at least get convicted of anything serious.

Hays and West tried to take a shortcut and failed to get the information they needed.

reply

Well it had a more conclusive conclusion than TD1. Here are my assumptions:

- Harris James killed Julie’s father because he saw the room and knew that Julie was held there,
- Assume Amelia died somehow, illness or accident. This is why the daughter left, to overcome grief.
- Hays and West only killed Harris because he turned on them and they had to defend themselves. The whole interrogation was illegal so they covered it up.
- The brother was murdered. Isabel pushed him. It’s not a premeditated murder, but an assault (push) that results in a death is still a murder. Maybe the charges would have been manslaughter.

They killed Harris James who was definitely not an innocent person, but who else did they kill?

😎

reply

Some here think the detectives killed the pedophile janitor they abducted and tortured. Not true. They let him go and told him to never come back.

Okay then. Thanks.
