Disappointing

Whenver it's trailers roared ahead of many movies, people were enthralled and this was definitely one of the most highly anticipated movie of the decade....but as soon as 1 hour passed into this, I started feeling disappointed and the feeling prevailed till the end.

When you watch Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, immediate comparison to Paan Singh Tomar comes into mind and the verdict is that Milkha is way below par to the making of Paan Singh Tomar.....Om Prakash Mehra commits same mistake that hundreds of bollywood directors have been committing in thousands of bollywood movies....songs are very much ill placed & ill timed that ultimately turn Bhaag Milkha Bhaag into an overstretched tiring film..... Farhan Akhtar has worked very hard and has done a very good job but still it is definitely not his best role.....he has done many other fantastic roles.

True essense of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag should have been its realism and that's where direction of Om Prakash Mehra with many flaws, hype and melodrama fails......lack of songs in Paan Singh Tomar helped it a lot in that case.

This movie shows there is plenty for bollywood directors to learn from Anurag Kashyap. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is neither a gr8 acting or directorial venture

At last a *Spoiler Alert*

Sonam Kapoor's role in the movie is equal to the role in the trailer (including songs) of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Are you kidding me when you say Farhan Akhtar has done other fantastic roles? I am a big fan of his movies (directorial/acting) and BMB is his best performance. He has worked harder than ever.

Secondly, I agree with you wrt to Paan Singh Tomar. BMB is more of a Bollywood biopic. It had songs and masala to make it appealing to the aam janta. Prasoon Joshi & Rakeysh Mehra should've thought of carving it a fad more linearly as the story is so poignant.

I rate it 8.0 and not 10/10 because of the above two points. It is a good movie.

I agree that the songs slowed it down to a crawl...

but I loved the movie, lifted it all up really well in the end...

gave it a 10/10 out of respect for milkha...

havent seen the movie yet so wont judge your review ,but cmon its the songs and randomly choreographed dance numbers is what makes bollywood movies ..bollywood movies , so if we stop trying to copy hollywood so much and try to have fun in what we are ,i dont know man ,it could be awesome

reply

Yes songs & dance numbers are a key part of bollywood movies but they should be avoided in biopics....tomorrow if someone makes a movie on Rahul Dravid and if they will show Dravid dancing and singing every 15 mins., then imagine how awkward it will seem to be ! ..... biopics must be made to look real...that's where hollywood makes masterpieces.....J. Edgar, The Iron Lady, Argo & many more r such wonderful examples.

reply

agreed there shouldn't be so many songs (haven't seen the movie don't know how many are there) but my point was that there should be some ,,and about biopics ,no matter where or what kind of movie is made it is made for profit and keeping the audience in mind even biopics are edited ,example j.edgar was kinky a$$ gay ..how much of that do you see in the movie ..why?? because audience(majority) cant take it.. similarly here people cant enjoy a movie without song and stuff ,maybe that's why paan singh tomar didn't work although its a awesome movie ..so you can keep cursing the filmmakers for adding so many songs and loose your interest in every movie or start enjoying the songs too

reply

Yeah right, and our audience will lap it up. Dream on.

I agree that lip-sync probably could've avoided, but to their credit (if you've noticed) most dance movies were particularly convincing and they were just choosing random movies themeselves. I think they've done alright considering that they had to remain true the original story as much as possible and yet had to appeal to the masses. And they've done a commendable job despite flaws. At least I think so.

The only good thing about the movie was that the races looked realistic. And the flashback about his childhood was OK. The rest were just bad.

Your personal view... no point in discussing how good or bad the movie is because everyone will come up with different views...

Pointless comparison re: Pan Singh Tomar. Don't get me wrong, I love the film, and of course it's significantly more layered and well made film than BMB. However they weren't trying to make such a film - they tried to widen the appeal to the audience, which sadly Pan Singh Tomar isn't. Now it's doing well and they've made a fine movie which emotionally connected with plenty of people despite it's flaws.

As for Anurag - again pointless. Why does everything has to be just one particular brand of cinema?

And to be honest Anurag's went off track since Gulaal, I couldn't stand his "That Girl in Yellow Boots". Also as much as I liked the attempt to make a Kafka-esque surreal flick, No Smoking was pretentious to the core. Just saying (Dev D, Gulaal, and Black Friday were obviously top notch).

You remember how Paan Singh Tomar bombed at the box-office? most multiplexes didn't run it for a whole week, leave alone single-screen theaters. PST was a classic tale, but how many people have watched it? Did you want Milkha's story to be drowned in the sea of so many Bolly movies? it was a story that was needed to be told, and it was needed to be heard by the masses. BMB was great film-making.
it is meaningless to compare the two movies.

I wouldn't say it was 'Bombed' but yeah. And we're talking about an athlete who's still alive and they have to get his approval regarding how he's portrayed onscreen. So there's that too. Cinematic liberties are minimal. And yet they managed to make a movie that at least managed to reach a wider audience. That's great, despite all the flaws it might have.
