I know his style of painting was to box the canvas, but I think it would have made more sense to name it after the characters that the wife painted. Unless the director/writer wanted to give each of their work their own "credit"?

I think you are right about "[giving] each of their work their own 'credit'." I think it was supposed to be a look at a couple from two individual perspectives. I think if it was "Cutie and Bullie" it would have been solely from her perspective.
