The parents were selfish

They could have allowed her to see the baby she gave birth to! That was illegal what they did! Yes I no she was just a surrogate but she had a right to see her baby. When the baby was born the stupid nurse should have handed him over to his birth mother. In another movie about a surrogate mother: She got to keep both babies who she was caring for a couple. Every surrogate has rights to any baby they give birth to.

But it wasn't HER baby, since it wasn't her egg. Technically, that made Christy the biological mother. It's standard for a surrogate or a mother giving her baby up for adoption not to hold the baby. And apparently it was written into the contract.

On ER, the post natal psychologist (I'm not exactly sure what she was called) it IS standard for the surrogate or the mother giving the baby up to hold the baby first and say goodbye, and to pass the baby on to the real or adoptive parents...it's an exercise to help the surrogate or birth mother to understand that they are giving up the rights of the baby, and that the baby is going into trusted hands...

Well I saw a similar movie and the surrogate got to keep both of the babies.

Do you know the difference between real and fantasy?? That was a movie...not real life!!

I believe the poster is referring to "Moment of Truth: A Child Too Many," which is based on a real case from the '80s in which a 'surrogate' fought for custody of twins after the couple that hired her decided they wanted only one of the babies.

She wasn't a surrogate as we now think of them, though--the twins were conceived through regular IVF using her eggs. She didn't obtain custody because she gave birth but because they were technically her biological children.

It was one of several big surrogacy/adoption cases in the '80s that changed laws, and inspired a ton of movies-of-the-week.

That's not how surrogate mothers work.

Even though they knew she was crazy at that point, they weren't doing it just to be mean. Babies form strong bonds from physical connection from birth. They knew that allowing Mallory to hold him would create a bond between them and this would not only make it harder for Mallory, but interfere with Christi's bonding. That's not to say she could never hold him, but not immediately after delivery.

the wife spends all that time and money to have a baby and then the FIRST thing she does is pawn it off on a NANNY while some CRAZY woman is trying to steal it back. her ASS should have been home with the kid. buy a SMALLER house and BE THERE for your child. the wife was SELFISH throughout the whole movie.she should have went over to stay at Mallorys when she said she needed help. instead she lets her husband(the idiot) go. Mitch should have just given it HARD to Mallory in the first place. the poor woman did complain to Mitch that her breast were HUGE and she was HORNY! COM-ON MITCH, were making a life time movie here!

reply

Yeah the nanny thing was weird. Most women can take maternity leave even if they don't give birth, like when they adopt or have a surrogate. It's like when fathers take paternity leave. And yeah, you would think considering someone was trying to steal the baby, she may even take suck leave or vacation days OR even keep the baby at the nannys because crazy lady knows where you live.

reply

By the time she gave birth they knew that Mallory was nuts, I wouldn't let her hold the baby either, also she had signed a contract when she agreed to the surrogacy to terminate her parental rights, which meant she had no legal right to the child.

reply

Are you serious? Your comments are ridiculous.

i just saw it on again today.christy was a SELFISH bitch! NO doubt about it.

How idiotic. You chose a good username.

THANKS!

I wasn't crazy about the parents myself, but my God. That chicks unwinding was not their fault. I am sure they would've been more than willing to let her hold the baby had she acted normal. They were just biding their time because she was literally holding their baby hostage. She tried to seduce the husband, she lied about the baby being hers, she constantly reminded the woman that she couldn't have children like her, she blurted out the sex of the baby on purpose, etc. There were a boat load of reasons that I would've kept her at a far distance after the baby was born. She was dilusional. In fact, I would've taken that baby and ran like hell.

reply

I agree Christy was a selfish bitch. what;s the point in wanting a baby that much you have to pay someone else to look after it? Mallory was more attractive too. mad or not I would have chosen her over the annoying Christy. Christy was a jealous bitch.

AGREE, 100%

Um, no surrogates do not have any legal rights to the baby they give birth to UNLESS it is biologically theirs. A surrogate is just an incubator to another couple's egg and sperm...NOT HERS. The biological parents are the only ones with legal rights to that baby...NOT the surrogate. If for some reason, she lends her egg to be fertilized by the bio dad's sperm, then she may have legal rights as in the case of Baby M. Otherwise, it is not biologically the surrogate's baby and therefore she has no rights to it. Learn the laws before speaking!

reply

Yes, surrogacy is very definitely a business contract. They use someone else's fertilized eggs (as in this film) and then they just grow the baby. As soon as humans can figure out how to grow entire baby's in glass containers, surrogates won't be needed.
