Shoddy disrespectful pseudo-intellectual self-aggrandizing garbage
This video is an insult to gay culture, and this scripted fake crock-doc (as in crock of sh**) is much more about the damaging cult of celebrity than anything else.
Apparently the intended takeaway here is that James Franco is a big brave hero for associating himself with those nasty gays, and the MOST IMPORTANT thing in the world is what a bunch of clueless out-of-shape str8 actors think about gay sex.
But James, if you care so much, why is everything about this so completely disrespectfully half-a**ed? Can you imagine making a film about any other culture where the “actors” show up completely unprepared: completely arrogantly ignorant about the people they are going to represent. Why research a role? it’s just about those silly homos, right James & Co?
At least there was one good laugh: when one of the “actors” took a hit of poppers with no idea of the effect they have, carrying on his conversation like he was waiting for a bus. At least the main “actor” made an attempt to imitate Pacino’s fairly comical approximation.
It was painful to hear the main actor try to justify why he was doing it, and being completely full of crap, desperately trying to come up with some intellectual reason. Why not grow a pair and just admit you worship celebrity and will do anything for a chance one might make you famous too?
Franco is just as much a victim of his own celebrity, he has no one in his life to call him on his delusional art-school BS, which he finally admits he can’t explain either. I can help: James, you’re doing it because you want attention and to pretend that you’re more than just one of those shallow actor friends of yours (who are 10 times as smart and honest).
I lived through the era of the bars in Cruising. Even if you're a prude, it was objectively a fantastic time, an interesting liberating reaction to oppression and alienation. It’s tragic that in 50 years this slapdash pseudo-intellectual garbage will probably be one of the main things people look to as a cultural artifact.
Do yourself a favor and just watch the original bar scene form Cruising on YouTube. And if that's not enough there's plenty of gay porn if you want to see what goes on with the awesomely sexy studs that gay guys really find attractive.
