Actually, no it hasn't been under that impression. Nor were Korea and Vietnam lost. Korea the U.S. drove the North and the Chinese out of South Korea and back to basically where the conflict started. Vietnam was about stopping communism (you know, a very violent system) from spreading through and taking control over all of Vietnam. The U.S. won every major battle in the conflict, and South Vietnam then held up fine on its own for two years after U.S. troops had been pulled out. However, then Congress cut the funding and the North went in and slaughtered one million people (which was one of the reasons why the U.S. had gone in in the first place).
Invading Afghanistan was due to 9/11 to go after the terrorists. Invading Iraq was due to the perceived threat of Saddam Hussein. Neither one had anything to do with the U.S. thinking it "owns" either country (in fact, the U.S. had never wanted to go back to Afghanistan ever again, which was what led to it becoming a haven for Osama bin Laden and his terrorists).
And yes, the U.S. trained and armed the Mujahideen, in order to counter that minor world power at the time, the Soviets.
