Safe cracking?

Uh no, that's called holding a torch. He could pick any random guy out of his crew to "crack" safes if all they need to do is torch it.

i think the hardest part was actually getting to that safe

Not true.

They have to cut a specific part of the safe (which differs by make of safe) in order to foil the locking mechanism. That's where knowledge of the safe comes in. They do not cut through and around the entire safe door if that is what you were thinking. Not using an oxy-acetylene torch, anyway.

They COULD do that (cut all the way through or around the door) if they were using a plasma cutter or thermic lances (which they were not), but even then you need someone with expertise to handle those devices.

I read of one gang that drilled a hole and squirted water inside. They did this after burning into a safe and finding all the paper money, bonds and checks, inside had caught fire and burned from the heat of a torch.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else
