This and Mistress America

Saw MA at the cinema this week, was enraptured by Greta's performance. Read up, found out about FH.

Is it just me or could MA be the sequel to FH? xD

reply

It could, but it's not :) I watched both movies this week (MA first) and found her character in FH less annoying / obnoxious. In MA the character seemed really full of herself and so self involved.

In FH, she seems more insecure and not (too) selfish. She seems to have genuine friendships in this one.

However, I enjoyed MA way more, the story was more compelling.

I'd watched FH when it came out, didn't like it; saw MA when it came out, loved it; watched MA a couple hours ago, still loved it; and now I'm watching FH again. Haven't finished it but I still find FH smug and self-satisfied, and its lead character unsympathetic and grating. Removed from the hype of its release - when Baumbach and Gerwig's relationship was such a big part of its marketing, and FH seen to be some reinvigoration of the indy film - I'm not sure what to make of its self-piteous heroine. Am I supposed to like her? Well, I'll see when I finish

It feels like a sequel because Greta acts the same way in whatever she is in. Overrated.
