Was Malcolm McDowell....

channeling David Caruso in CSI Miami with his cheesey delivery of horrible lines?

And seriously, why would a serial killer NOT eat a burger after committing multiple murder? Serial killers gotta eat too!

I didn't think Malcolm was horrible. If anything, it was his character that was horribly written. I thought he was funny in a cheesy (good) way sometimes in this movie.

It seemed to me that he was took a different approach than the rest of the cast. Most of the other actors seemed to be taking it seriously while MM appeared to be close to parody.

reply

I agree, but I'm not sure if it was MM's choice.
Like when he says: "I called the mayor and told him I got everything under control", but he had nothing under control, and ironically the mayor was dying when MM told him that and he didn't notice, even though he thinks of himself as a great "detective" (the bragging he did throughout the movie).

It seems he was written as a parody, but as you said, strange that all the rest of the characters were written seriously.

One of his worst performances ever - it was like he didn't care.

reply

Come on, he was one of the best things in the film! "Now you're piling hummus on the burger!"

If you want to see a film that MM fits perfectly then check out THE BARBER. Most of the film is set in the dark night period of Alaska and there's a killer loose in town. His narrative is amusing and his character seemed to be written with him in mind. If you just want slasher scenes and action every 5 minutes then stay away.

He's really good in that. Lesser seen McDowell gem.

Stop putting Avocado on the burger! XD

His character is clearly a parody of sorts. He thinks that he's this bad ass action hero cop, that he's going to bring in the killer while spouting off one-liners. He's kind of an *beep* and he doesn't take the girl seriously at all. His performance was very fitting, and his lines were ridiculous because he was a ridiculous guy.

I think MM approached his character as a once hot shot cop but now past his prime, possibly even carrying on when he should have retired. With failing faculties, maybe hinting at dementia, his sheriff is wrong in just about everything and stubbornly pig headed in his delusion over his infallibility. Plenty of material there for MM's eye rolling, sneering, OTT acting style.

I thought he was just taking the dialogue and role he was given, adding spice, narcissism, and ego to it. A blowhard, unfiltered and sure of himself, he ultimately loses to the blowtorch brought to a gunfight. It was a payday. I think for me I would continue to watch this annually because he's in it.

King is the straight act to the duo. She is quite good in this, I think. She could have slummed it.
