This mostly for people who are familiar with Miike's movies. Shield of Straw feels mostly like a very expensive production with no personal touch from the director. Mostly like a "directing through the telephone" movie.
How do you feel about it?
It's not much of a "Miike film", as you said, but I do think it's a very well-made thriller regardless.

It is high concept film that could be all sorts of crazy fun, but it was just so average.
Oh no, on the contrary, it's one of his finest! High quality cinema, expert filmmaking, many, many beautiful shots and a few incredible scenes. This is the best thriller/action movie I've seen in years. It's the work of a master, one who's made many movies before, it shows.

I loved this film.
Amazing story,it was different but kept me excited and the acting was well done especially by Tatsuya Fujiwara.
