Enjoyable enough, they should go ahead and move forward with the Dark Universe

I ran across this film on 4K for $13.99 and decided to go ahead and pick it up, mostly for the wealth of special features on the disc.

Last night I rewatched it, which is my second time seeing it after having first given it a look when it was released. While I don't think it's anywhere near as good as the '99 film, I still thought it was pretty entertaining with some good action scenes, a good look, high production values and great effects.

I know there has been a lot of talk over the past year about the Dark Universe and if Universal is going to move forward with it. Will they or won't they? has been the question.

I think they should! The Mummy is good enough to make me think that future installments will be a good way to spend a Saturday night.

Hollywood is a stopped clock so keep the faith.

Just ran across this article:

It seems to me that they are still wanting to move ahead in some fashion but from what I can tell the version of the DU that The Mummy was supposed to kickstart is dead. I really do think that is a shame as I not only love Tom Cruise but I also enjoyed this film. The reviews were way too harsh.

So how good those special features were? Were they worth the buy? Being a filmmaking buff myself, I sometimes buy movies just for the special features alone. Are they not to commercial in tone?

Been a while since I watched them so I can't remember the specifics, but there's a lot of stuff on the disc. It's actually pretty packed in comparison to a lot of other releases that are coming out today, with little or no in the way of extra content. Here's a list:

* Deleted and Extended Scenes
* Cruise & Kurtzman: A Conversation
* Rooted in Reality
* Life in Zero-G: Creating the Plane Crash
* Meet Ahmanet
* Cruise in Action
* Becoming Jekyll and Hyde
* Choreographed Chaos
* Nick Morton: In Search of a Soul
* Ahmanet Reborn Animated Graphic Novel
* Feature Commentary with Director/Producer Alex Kurtzman and Cast Members Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, and Jake Johnson

I know some of that isn't very descriptive but it does give you an idea of how much stuff is on there. They're not especially long--most of those are under 10 minutes, with the exceptions being the Cruise & Kurtzman conversation (21 minutes) and obviously the commentary--but it adds up.

If you enjoy going through special features, I'll also mention that another fairly recent release that did a pretty good job with behind-the-scenes stuff was Murder on the Orient Express. Not sure if you saw that one, but it was also above-average in terms of extras.

Hey thanks for the review!
I've seen the Orient Express movie, production design was great on that one!
I'll check them all out!

To be clear, I am actually talking about the recent Orient Express adaptation by Ken Branagh, not earlier 70s film.

But yeah, if you liked the movie, and you like special features, definitely consider picking up the Blu-Ray (I am assuming you have a Blu-Ray player). It's a pretty good release in terms of extras. Not a top shelf release with hours and hours of stuff, but I was pretty happy with it.

Yep I meant the same movie ;)
