Eric was just going to leave but Rey pushed him to SPOILER

Early in the morning when they arrived at the house where the gang was sleeping, Eric got into his car and was about to just drive off (provided he could start it, of course) but Rey pressed the issue and made Eric change his mind and go inside. Out of greed for the gang's loot or a desire to confront Henry, I am not sure which was dominant. If it wasn't for Rey, Eric could have just taken off and buried his dog and Rey could have rejoined his brother. Rey got himself, his brother and the other two gang members killed for nothing.

my take on that scene, is that Eric had felt some call it what you will, kinship, responsibility, friendship towards Rey and realized that Rey was determined to confront his brother. And so He helped him to do that. you'll pardon the pun, but Eric really didn't have a dog in that fight. All he wanted was his car, so he could bury his dog

And maybe Eric also felt a little remorseful as he had actively helped Rey changing his feelings about his brother. Rey believed Henry would wait for him and Eric, without even knowing Henry, had crushed that image in order to get Rey on his side in his pursuit of the gang.
In fact, Rey wasn't that wrong. Henry wanted to turn the car and pick up his brother, he wanted it badly but he was wounded and his mates had enough of the dependent Rey. They were on the run and didn't want to take any risk to be caught when turning back. The whole arguement in the car that led to the accident was about going back for Rey or not and Henry defending his brother.

So maybe, being in his car, he felt he couldn't leave Rey that way, Rey who had shown him loyalty that he didn't really deserve as his motives to save Rey were selfish.
When at the end, Eric started crying in front of the old man in the room I wondered if it wasn't because he realized that Henry, in his own awkward way, might had cared for Rey and he, Eric, had caused in a way the confrontation between them and had let Rey die in the idea that he was abandonned by his brother. Just my ideas though

Thank you! The beauty in a film like this one lays in the fact that every viewer can make up his own interpretation of the story.
Michôd respects the audience and let it to them to fill in the blanks. I like that very much.

Eric cried because he lost a faithful companion just like he lost his dog. Rey behaved a lot like a dog throughout the film if you pay close attention.
