What is up with the missing numbers?

Perhaps I don't precisely understand the rules. If so, please help me out by explaining.

In the math segments, I assumed that all the numbers are to be used in order to solve for the target number. Yet, almost every week someone is given credit for an answer even though they have neglected to use one, and sometimes two, of the numbers provided.

What gives?

They don't have to use all the numbers, I wondered about this myself.

Thanks for the info.

No problem man.

In addition, the number to be reached isn't always achievable. It's entirely random and sometimes there just is no solution.

Surely that actually answered your own question? =)
But there's been a few contestants who thought the same (Jonathan Ross, being the only one I specifically remember) who asked this, because he thought he had to use all the numbers, so it has been explained as well - and if you watched the newest episode Rachel explained "all" the rules of the number rounds ;)

They don't have to use all of the letters to make a word, so why should they have to use all of the numbers?
