Parkland v JFK -Two different directors take on 22/11/1963

I watched this movie recently on blu ray with the directors commentary on. Peter Landesman clearly believes that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, and that there was no conspiracy. He sees Oswald as a pathetic young man who killed Kennedy to gain recognition and fame. The only person in this film who does not accept this view is his mother, Marguerite. Landesman regards her as deluded. The actress who plays her, Jacki Weaver definitely sees her as slightly unbalanced. Landesman does not subscribe to the view that there was a conspiracy.

Parkland is a total contrast to Oliver Stone's JFK , which sees the assassination as the result of a conspiracy by powerful forces. In his film, Oswald is a cog in a huge wheel operated by the State ( CIA, the military, big business). Stone's view is the murders of both Kennedy and Oswald were planned, although there is never a Mr Big sitting at the head. Stone's view is that Oswald was working for US intelligence in some capacity, and that he was framed for the assassination.

It is interesting to watch both points of view.

I saw JFK when it first came out and was riveted by it, especially Kevin Costner's performance. In retrospect, after seeing Parkland and reading Vincent Bugliosi's book, Four Days in November, I've come to the conclusion that JFK was mostly humbug, Oliver Stone's buying into Jim Garrison fevered conspiracy theories.
