I hope he divorced his wife...Spoilers

The couple just lost their son and they're still grieving. They are a wealthy couple and the husband is a bit of a workaholic. The husband comes home and finds his wife and their sons college buddy in the kitchen talking while she's laughing and preparing a meal. The husband tells his wife that he thought the college boy would only be there for a day or two. She says it's nice to have some company. He says he came home to see her. She says it would be great to have more than just a weekend together with him since they just lost their son and she feels alone. He says he's here now and that he'll get a friend to stay with her when he's not home. She says nothing to that.

The wife doesn't work and obviously has a lot of free time. There's nothing to keep her tied to the house where she has to stay there all day. I'm sure they have plenty of friends so there's really no excuse for feeling alone other than wanting to spend more time with her husband. So why not just have a serious discussion with him about how she feels rather than just making it sound like she's complaining?

The college guy overhears and tells her that he overstayed his welcome. They talk about him returning to school but he decides not to, so she offers him to stay in the guest house in exchange for fixing it up. He says "what about your husband" she tells him that she'll talk to him.

How about discussing it with your husband first? It's home to both of them so he should have some imput. Besides, they really don't know him all that well other than he was their sons roommate in college before he died.

The husband is annoyed by the noise the college guy is making while fixing the guest house. He tells his wife that as soon as the college guy is done he wants him gone. Sounds like a reasonable request but she takes it as an order. The husband works hard and only wants some peace and quiet while home. Not an unreasonable desire and what reason is there to keep the college guy around once he's done?

She complains to her female friend about her husband, to which her friend says everyone grieves differently. She then complains that he hasn't been "interested" in a while. She goes on to say that on the rare occasion he decides to bless her with sex he barely looks at her. She then says that maybe it's time to split up. Her friend tells her she's out of her mind and that she can't get a divorce the same year she loses her son because she'll end up in the looney bin. She shakes her head "yes" and says that it hurts and "the guy you devoted your whole life too...you know".

Everyone does grieve differently and her issues should be discussed seriously with her husband not her friend.

Her friend then jokingly suggests that she have an affair. She laughs and says "I could never do that...no way". Her friend then says that her husband would never find out because he's never there. The wife just shakes her head and smiles.

What a terrible friend! Someone who would suggest having an affair to solve her problems and suggesting that her husband would never find out isn't much of a friend.

Sometime later, the wife is in the swimming pool when the college guy dives in. Rather than get upset with him or just get out of the pool, she gets chummy with him. They laugh and splash water at each other.

Wait, I thought that she was suppose to be grieving the loss of her son?

She finds excuses to go out and check on him and eventually is confronted by him in the guest house as he's standing there naked. She says she's sorry and turns away but he puts his hand out to stop her. She turns to him as he brushes her hair from her face. She says "no" but let's him kiss her; eventually resting her head on his shoulder as he continues to kiss her. In the next scene, they're making love in the guest house.

There is absolutely no excuse for the wife's behavour. She never left when he appeared, although she easily could have nor did she protest when he kissed her. The loss of a son and feeling lonely or having problems with your husband doesn't justify what she did.

After making love and still lying in bed together, he asks her if she's okay and she says she doesn't know. He asks if she's going to make him leave and she says no as she kisses him. In following scenes they are seen kissing by the pool and lying naked together on the bed in her and her husbands bed.

This woman has absolutely no morals! It's bad enough that she's carrying on an affair with this guy but to do so in her and her husbands bed is just blatantly despicable.

The husband returns home unexpectedly while they are lying in their bed. She comes downstairs smiling at him. The college guy then follows saying that he's getting a replacement light. The husband wants to know what the college guy was doing in their room and she tells him that he was replacing a bulb. The husband looks at her with suspicion and walks away. She sighs with relief. She follows him back to their bedroom telling her husband all the work they have accomplished while he was away. He confronts her, asking her what she is doing. She shakes her head and just walks away.

So much for her friend telling her that her husband would never find out about her having an affair. She was so blatant about it bringing the college guy into her bedroom and almost getting caught. I'm pretty sure the husband had a clue as to what was going on.

She brings the college guy dinner out in the guest house and tells him that she having dinner with her husband. The college guy tells her not to worry that he's not going to ruin her marriage. As she leaves, he grabs her arm, she turns and hugs him while caressing his half naked body and kissing his shoulder before she leaves. Later that night, while lying in bed with her sleeping husband, she gets up and goes to the guest house to see the college guy. They make love. The college guy says that this is dangerous and she responds saying that she doesn't care.

She is one for the books! She's selfish, uncaring, devious and cruel. She has absolutely no respect for her husband or her marriage. She does all this while her husband is still grieving the loss of his son.

Sometime later, she's in town with the college guy and happens to see him talking to a girl around his age. During the drive back to the house, she tells him that she saw him and tells him that he should be dating girls his age. He gets upset thinking that the affair is over and tells her that he loves her. When they return to the house, she tells him that her husband will be returning in a few hours and that he should leave before he arrives.

The next morning, lying in bed with her husband, she wakes up to find that the college guy has returned. She goes to the guest house and finds that he has attempted to kill himself. He's taken to the hospital and then released; returning to the house with her. The husband protests but she's emphatic about the college guy staying for 2 weeks until he's stronger. The husband questions her about why she feels the college guy is her responsibility. She says that there is no one else and she promised the hospital she would take care of him.

The college guy tries to continue their affair but she's reluctant and doesn't respond to his advances. Later, she tells him that it's time for him to leave but he refuses threatening to tell her husband about their affair.

Jumping ahead, the wife comes to suspect that the college guy is crazy and killed her son along with killing another college guy. She packs his things and locks him out of the house. He confronts her and again threatens to tell her husband.

The wife confesses her affair to her husband telling him that she has been sleeping with the college guy in the house while he was gone. All she can say is that she's "sorry....so sorry". The husband asks her if all she has to say is "sorry". She says that she needed someone and he was there. The husband then says "so it could have been anybody but it just happened to be our sons best friend". She shakes her head "yes". He tells her that he works and is on the road 30 weeks a year and has never once cheated on her. She gets defensive, saying that he owns the company and doesn't need to be on the road 30 weeks a year, that he chose to be on the road that he chose to be away from her. She then says that she had her son but now she has no one. The husband gets angry and says that he has no one but he didn't humiliate himself by sleeping with some kid. He then says "Shame on you" and starts to walk away. She asks where he's going and he responds "To the club...what do you care?". As he leaves, she tells him that the college guy is dangerous. He tells her that she should have thought of that before she slept with him.

She carried on an affair with a much younger guy, a college friend of their son in their house. She only confessed to her husband because the college guy threatened to tell him. She acted remorseful in telling her husband but then gets defensive and tries to turn it around and make it sound like it's all her husband's fault. How pitiful an excuse!

The college guy then tries to kill the husband but fails, only seriously injuring him. The wife is frightened of the college guy and falsely agrees to help him kill the husband when the husband is brought home from the hospital. The college guy is waiting to finish the job but instead is shot and killed by the wife when he attempts to kill the husband.

I hope the husband wastes no time kicking her out of the house and divorcing her. After all, she had thoughts at one time of divorcing him but instead decides to have an affair. He should also make all the facts public about his wife's infidelity with a crazy college guy. The shame and public humiliation she would suffer doesn't come close to what she deserves for her behavour. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if her friend, who suggest an affair, was the first to shun her.

Um... You have way too much time on your hands. The husband treated her like garbage. He was no prize he myself.

reply

Um no he didn't. Maybe he was around so much but you don't know how he treated her..

Regardless, that doesn't justify what she did. She could've talked to him reasonably, not *beep* her deceased sons supposed best friend.

OP, I agree with you.

Neither the wife nor the husband are a prize. As his friend put it to him after he finds out about the affair, he's constantly a jerk to his wife when he's home - and as the audience, we see this. The wife mentions it's the husband who's wanted some work done around the house and has been b*tching about it - then he b*tches when she gets someone to do the work. And as the wife puts it later in the movie, the husband owns his company - he doesn't have to be gone so much. Of course the wife shouldn't have had an affair, but I don't feel her husband gave her a chance to have a reasonable discussion about how sad she is or how he's not helping anything by essentially ignoring her except when he wants to complain at her.

Judging by the fact they still looked at each other with caring at the end of the movie (and the fact the husband's friend told him it possibly is his fault), I think he probably forgave her. They probably would need some marriage counseling to work on both their issues, but they probably didn't divorce.

I liked her better in "Road House".

The husband was neglectful and couldn't wait to get away from her. She tried to talk and he wouldn't.
