In darkness was Fantastic.. Sometimes you can catch it on Starz or StarzEncore. Well worth it only it was in Poland that a man hit the Jews in sewers.

Only 6.1 because it's barely watchable. A few days ago my girlfriend (who is Jewish) and I watched "In Darkness" and were blown away. We intended to watch this as a sort of a "Jews hiding underground" doubleheader but only got around to it yesterday.

The execution of "No Place On Earth" was generic and artless, that numbing mix of old people recounting the past over actors acting out the past. If someone is recounting a story of them lowering themselves into the cave, then you SEE an actor being lowered into the cave. If someone is hiding under a bed, then you SEE an actor hiding under a bed. The viewer is neither invested in the documentary element or the dramatic/staged element; I find this format UNBEARABLE as a moviegoer. Just let me listen to the *beep* story from the people who experienced it and use photos and archival footage along with contemporary footage of the site, I do not need to see actors acting out every single detail that they mention. This is unnecessarily (redundant) tedious. Everything was given equal weight and there was no pacing whatsoever. More screen time was given to establishing the fact that the men were collecting scrap metal for the German government than the execution of Esther Stermer and her son... very poor execution, it took a second for us to figure out what had happened. The film was very murky and the docudrama elements were poorly realized.

I watch more documentary film a year than I do regular film, so my liking "In Darkness" more has nothing to do with the fact that it was dramatized and "No Place on Earth" was only half dramatized. It was simply a worse film that was profoundly disappointing.

STORY 10/10 FILM 5/10

I agree. I tried to like it given the subject matter but it was told in a very confused manner and after awhile (after rewinding numerous times) I gave up. I like documentaries but I found this tedious & frustrating to watch and eventually I lost interest. So, I agree with the low rating.

I thought it was a compelling story, especially when he sees the names in the ceiling of the cave, and the ability for these people to survive, and then to go back and see it again... it was beautiful and heartbreaking, but also inspiring... it could have been better, but I think it was better than a 6.1, I'd rate it a 7 overall, but the premise and story is a 10.

That one line was so heartbreaking, when they come out and the little girl's thought is told, "I forgot there was a sun."

I absolutely agree with your score and review.

Currently 6.6 but I too was surprised. I thought it was amazing for a small documentary. Very moving as well. Still amazed and I'm going to watch it again to see what I missed.
